Just got back from a couple of days spent in York...lovely city in a great part of the country BTW.

But the parking charges...ay caramba. £5.50 for four houres, £9.50 for the day  I thought only the ripoff capital of the world, our own capital city, levied such high charges !

Tried the park and ride on day 2, £1.80 return and 10 mins into the city, 15 out. Pretty good value I suppose, but ceases to run at 7pm ish.

Anyone else have to fork out a kings ransome just to park their car?

Reading's car parks can be anything from about £8 a day to £16 within 5 minutes walk of each other. Putney cost me a fortune (er, actually it cost my employer ) about £18. Used to be a great car park off Warwick Road in London, nice and hand for Earls Cout tube and cost £6 a day or £25 a week. Shame they put an office block on it and the Tesco car park next door charged about £25 a day last time I was there.

I suppose The Shops are all closed by then. The main Idea is to help congestion between 8-4? York Is Lucky they have a park & ride scheme.

There will be a time when that will be the only way & means Into Town & City Centres.

Doubt it very much.
It sounds like a good idea until you go into the logistics of moving vast numbers of people - up to hundreds of thousands, most of who travel in before 9 and out after 4.

To accommodate those numbers, within the time required:
1) how many park and ride sites do you need?
2) how many spaces in each one?
3) how long will the site take to fill?
4) how many buses do you need?
5) how often must they run?
6) how long does it take to fill a bus?
7) how do you prevent bus congestion in the centre?

When you start going into this, you realise that there are massive problems - plus ancillary problems such as:

1) what do all those buses and their drivers do at off-peak times?
2) how do you keep congestion down around the park and ride sites?
3) what happens when people arrive at park and ride sites only to find that they're full?

Somehow, I can't see that happening.

Regards
Peter

Bit of a bind if you want to do a bit of afternoon shopping then call for a meal. And York is more of a tourist centre than a workplace.
