Driving along the M27 today, a matrix sign at the M3 junction said, simply

"Keep left unless overtaking"

Poetry.

Especially since my van now sports the exact same message on a sticker from http://www.middlelanemorons.com/

I've seen exactly one of those ever.

If you're travelling north on the M40, and onto the M42 towards the M5, on that 2-lane bit of M40 the sign there used to regularly say this.

Unfortunately what would happen is someone would take notice and move into the left hand lane, then a little further on another lane wold appear from the left and by that time the middle lane moron will have forgotten the sign and will carry on in the middle lane again.

*sigh*

I thought I'd post this on this old thread, rather than awake either of the two MLM Krakens of recent years

Today on the M27 near J8, matrix sign said:

Matrix Sign wrote:
DON'T HOG THE MIDDLE LANE

All better than the one I passed on Tuesday morning which read PENRITH, 19 Miles, 18 Minutes.

It was 21 minutes before I reached and passed Penrith!!
I'm sure the driver of the 40 foot artic I passed took even longer!

I think whoever puts those messages up should be sacked on the spot for incompetence! :)

Should really have one on both sides of the rear windscreen, since you could find yourself on either side of a MLM!

I had considered one in the left side window of my delivery van, so that when I draw alongside a MLM as I pass in L3  they would see it.

It serves a useful secondary purpose: my assistant has distinct MLM tendencies (I'm combatting this by frequent shouting at her), so it appears in the rear view mirror the right way round as a useful aide memoire for her, though I'm not sure how much she looks in the mirror, apart to check her make up....

Ok so it's an old post, but there seems to be some irony in having a sign at the M3 junction telling you to keep left unless overtaking... It should also say "or continuing on the M27"?!

Fiction:

Portsmouth 18 miles; 21 minutes.

On the sign the other day in the rush hour!

You're absolutely right Malcolm, complete & utter tosh....I reckon I could do it in half that time if I go in to "white lining" mode

But seriously, it's only meant to be an indication of the amount of congestion.

Bouncing this old thread, but again today the M27 was suddenly a mass of "keep left unless overtaking" and "Don't hog the middle lane" matrix signs.

And yes, I passed a car driven by a middle-aged man with a moustache (not that I'm stereotyping) in the middle lane for no explicable reason....

I guess its a capacity issue, driving on the motorway, and choosing the correct lane, manoeuvring around other traffic, and reading all the signs is clearly beyond some people. This is where we need to acknowledge that driving is a privilege for those capable, and not a right for all, and accept that some people are going to need to be removed from the roads, without having committed any obvious offence, for the safety of all.

But we have engineered. either directly or inadvertently, a society in which it almost impossible to function without a motor car. If we are unwilling to change that aspect of society by providing very adequate, reliable and affordable public transport then we have to accept less than capable people driving and an increased rate of accidents.

I wonder how many members of this forum, other than me, would accept the large rise in taxation and restrictions on use of their cars which would be needed to facilitate such a public transport system?
