I can think of two reasons straight away , one is for security as the driver will be an "advanced" police driver who has current training in escape and evasion tactics ( though I dont know if evading speed cameras is part of the training :D ) and the second is that in common with high ranking businessmen and others of that ilk their time is valuable and quite frequently the car is used as a mobile office.

My personal opinion is that his position as ACPO spokesman for Road Policing is now untenable , this wasnt a couple of miles an hour over the limit and caught out by some half hidden scamera , 90mph is quick enough for you to know full well that you are way past the speed limit , for someone in his position to make that sort of error is embarassing to say the least, I believe that Paul hit the nail on the head by saying that he was probably driving to the conditions , not the speed limit .

Oops.

One thing to wish for hidden scams.. but then as Buchner once wrote in his play about Danton's Death.. the "Revolution gobbles up her children"

I guess he got "carried away" on a nice bit of road. Like lots of others beofre him.

Normally, I guess most would offer several cups of sweet inky tea and sympathy ..

But  This guy happens to be in charge of Traffic and telling everyone else to slow it down... and wanted hidden cams to persuade drivers to tone it down. :banghead:

It does rather undermine his credibility. I have to say so., You guys .. I know this. You have the right to expect that someone who stands for enforcing a speed limit so vocally and publicly takes care to apply COAST himself and not speed. On this occasion . I side with BRAKE who say he must consider his position here. I note Paul says similar

I am sure Merry felt safe .. and that this cracking piece of road was empty at the time.. but even so. We all know that such roads are prime targets and that this road is a hot tourist road for NT propeerties and Llangollen's steam railway and hot air balloon races.

We could all go mad on such roads.. but senior cops have to abide by principles all the same. I can state "professional discretion" because this Force places a high priority on this in al areas of its work. But robots/automated means do not give discretion. We all know this.

If I got caught doing 90 in a 60, I would be working on a plea of mitigation or hardship.
If my employer needed me to drive there would be some serious negotiation required to keep my job.
If a plumber or electrician got caught they would be looking for a recruit a mate to drive to keep thier bussiness afloat.

They would not be given a cushy job planning the olyimpics and a chaufer.
Even if he gets banned for 6 months , he has still got off light.

Assuming the speed recording device was accurate that probably meant he had close to 100mph on the clock. Of course there is nothing wrong with that kind of speed in the right conditions. However, hypocrisy is a more serious crime.

There has obviously been some negotiation, as he has only just received the NIP

What makes you think that?

I can tell you that the story broke because a welsh free-lance journalist spotted the court listing for 21st November.

That doesn't mean the NIP must have been received recently.
Have some people not waited months for their summons after returning their NIP?

As a court date has been set they have filed papers with the court a few days before the 6 month cut off.

It would be interesting to know who leaked the information that a court date had been set If he has not received a summons yet?

brunstrom? the court?

The Wrexham court listings clerk told Sky TV News this morning that Mr Hughes was not 'required to attend'.

I'm DESPERATE to fully unravel what's going on. Any ideas? This is proving very difficult. The court can't really cope with the media and SYP and ACPO are apparently in full blackout / lockdown.

If he's not going to be there I am less inclined to attend, but if I were to then surely some questions would be answered. They can't conduct the proceedings in camera purely because of the defendant's position, for heaven's sake!

Potentially not. It states that he has been summoned, but then reports that the police force denies the issue of a summons.
