Mobile speed cameras could be scrapped throughout Northamptonshire under plans being considered by the county council.
:clap: :clap:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/northamptonshire/7757475.stm

The county fears its six mobile cameras are creating unnecessary hazards which could lead to more accidents.

Council leader Jim Harker, said: "I know there have been concerns from the public and the RAC about them, and we will be reviewing it."

Alternative safety measures are being considered and fixed speed cameras are likely to remain in use.

Mr Harker said: "This is an area I know the public are very concerned about.

"There are benefits but also a number of issues where they are not so confident about them.

"There is evidence that people tend to react quickly to cameras and slow down sharply, creating hazards and possibly accidents."

The council is now looking at safety measures such as sleeping policemen and better lighting.

At last another council has seen some sense

Since when have sleeping policemen been safety measures? They cause damage to your spine, your car , the environment and cause people to brake sharply then speed up, then brake sharply then....

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

Perhaps they have discovered a loophole which means they can add sleeping policeman to the head count of real officers so they can pretend there are suddenly loads more plod :D

All well and good but, does anyone other than Dr Luxford know just why they are considering scrapping these useless things??
I have read the 20 page report and have been horrified to learn just what has taken place in the name of road safety. The C/Constable should be sacked immediately and the SCP disbanded. What a shower they are and we are told that we should abide by the laws of the land. The old saying of,--Who's policing the police?? is very true in today's arena and is reflected in the unacceptable calibre of those in Northants. A total disgrace to their uniforms.OLLIE

Ollie

I pressume you are referring to my report;

“The Case against Mobile Speed Cameras in Northamptonshire”
http://www.abd.org.uk/downloads/mobile_ ... uxford.pdf
directly as aa 885kb PDF file

or indirectly via; http://www.abd.org.uk/speed_cameras_luxford.htm

I have heard no further news about this and I understand they are still being used, but don't see them about so much.

The chief constable has now retired and the relavent Chief Inspector appeared to quietely move on.

I think that Brian Binley MP (Con, South Northants) may have had a hand in this after being banned from driving on reaching 12 points.

You may also wish to read;

“The Damage to Road Safety by the focus on Speed reduction and enforcement”

and "How Speed Cameras Have Cost ‘Up To 10,000 Lives’"

which extended some analysis originally started by Paul Smith.

And if Northampton shire is feeling the pinch over the speed policy -sanity prevails .
Be nice to know what influences are put on Police budgets to put any police other than warranted Constables out on the beat . But then most councils have their local lot of hit men - litter enforcement officers ( or some such name), then there's "Parking attendants" -where ALL the revenue goes to the council kitty .What the CC's haven't taken in is that the public want to see Constables on patrol -not some ineffective replica of an officer ,with no real powers , walking round and asking criminals to wait till a proper officer arrives (when there ain't enough of them to go round) - meanwhile Mr Big sues police authority for failing to provide for his needs in the delay .

Well. If you want to put the pressure on and get them removed write to Jim Harker at.--
Leaders Office. Northants County Council. PO BOX 136 County Hall. Northampton. Northamptonshire. NN1 1AT.
Just write what you think and don't hold anything back. Tell him what you think to these evil systems and operations as I have done. I have received a card stating that they will respond to my letter and that they will give their decision in December on their options of removal of mobiles. Here's hoping!!! If no one does anything then nothing will ever change OLLIE
