A lot of common sense there...

Yes but then he also states "That is why I support Ken Livingstone, fuel tax, road tolls, lower speed limits, enforcement cameras and traffic calming. I would even be happy to see a ban on cars of more than, say, 100bhp."

100bhp...? a large family hatch has more than that... so a 'hot' car will end up being one with no more power but every possible weight removed, eg crash bars, thinner steel, ABS and all the electronic gizmos, etc etc.

just don't think it through do they?

or someone will build an engine with 99bhp and 760ft/lb of torque

Looking at the obvious mods to mopeds - will this sort of ban even get enforced?

A couple of things spring to my mind here gents. I would hazzard a guess that we have all been young (at least once) :) and with a low powered car full of our mates have entered that bend..... a little too fast.
The puny tyres, extra weight, the inadequate suspension and the lack of grunt from the engine all conspire to re-enforce the laws of motion and ........ a "near straight line" trajectory becomes a real possibility! :o

Ah! You remember!......Good

Presumably then, we were all lucky and survived to tell the tale. Many were not and I can't help but think thats what's missing is MANDATORY further training AFTER passing the test.......and a low price is essential!

First: A skid pan course, to show young drivers what happens to a car when you loose it. The wrong place to experience this for the first time is for real on the highway..

Second: How to avoid it, and what to do if you don't to give yourself and others the best chance of survival.

Third: The difference between a light (driver only) car and a car loaded with the equivalent weight of four of your mates in a skid or overspeed situation.....

Fourth: Doing the right thing must be instinctive..... learned by a guided process of experience.

Most women tend to be more timid when it comes to driving than young men who relish the "challenge" of driving. Whilst young women tend to have more low speed accidents, young men tend to have more higher speed accidents. Therefore slightly different training is required.

Young men will always be young men and nothing will change that....

Sometimes, their youthful bravado is "used" by others who either "never had it" or were "too wise" to allow themselves to be used.

So the least we can do is to train them properly ........ Ah! but THAT requires GOVERNMENT to INVEST in the process..

As Sheakespeare said:........."Therein lies the rub"

Ah yes I do remember. Hillman Avenger, no suspension to talk of, model -1.3 slow, tyres thin, 6 mates going to play football. Off ramp of Kingston Bridge in Glasgow going too fast to take the turn, which with this setup was probably about 25mph! Waltsed round a few times ended up facing correct way and carried on to footy. Ah memories.

Nice post Draco. Agree with it all.
