Mr Big Speed Ticket ScamNov 16 2006
By Andrew Hirst

DOZENS of people face jail after a massive scam to dodge speeding tickets led to a major police probe.

The Examiner can exclusively reveal today the full extent of the con and the tough punishments being given out by judges.

Police will arrest about 75 people in the coming months who have all given a false name and address after they were caught by mobile cameras speeding mainly on Kirklees roads.

Most gave the same false name and a house address on Manchester Road in Thornton Lodge in a bid to avoid the £60 fine and three penalty points.

The house - along with three other addresses on the same stretch of road also given by people trying to dodge the tickets - are derelict or no longer lived in.

The lies amount to a determined bid to evade justice and the four people arrested so far were all charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The investigation is being headed by Det Sgt Keith Skarz from Kirklees CID.

Attempting to pervert the course of justice is a serious charge that can only be dealt with at crown court and is reflected by the fact that all four have been jailed for about four months even though they did not have any previous convictions and admitted the offence.

We can reveal today that a further 75 people have given the same false information and all will be arrested - but they can hand themselves in rather than wait for that ominous knock on the door.

A `Mr Big' is behind the scam who has charged people cash with the promise that he will 'sort' the speeding ticket out.

But it is an offence that can easily be detected because when the car is caught on camera speeding, the registration number, make, model and colour are all clear to see and some are good images of the drivers too.

Don't know where the article is but I'm so angry about the subversion of our system of law and justice that facilitates these offences. See thread on PH SP&L (registration required) including idiot contributions from vonhosen and my responses.

Nice to see that the verdicts and toughness of the punishments have been decided before most of the people have been arrested. :(

I also think that it's a bluff.

It's policing, but not as we know it.
