A double amputee has been jailed for a year after leading police on a high-speed car pursuit, using modified broom handles to control the vehicle.

No way would i get in car being operated by someone who was driving using 2 broom handles. I question some peoples ability to use two feet....

Reminds me of the "Mr Bean" episode! :rotfl:

OTOH is this really any diferent to Douglas Bader driving an "Unmodified" car using two tin legs? (I met him once, briefly)

Bit like the blind Iraqi. Mad, wreckless, dangerous. Certainly, but nevertheless I have a sneaking admiration for the spirit to triumph over adversity!

(Lets face it, if he had managed to lead the police in a "High speed chase" he must have been quite good at it despite his eventual crash. Under normal (IE Unpersued) cicumstances he might well have been as competant as anybody else!)

Twas in our patch...

Yeah.. a local "character"... a "wide" lad really. Oh yes .. our officers were amazed when the discovered how he actually drove the car. Some of it perhaps down to luck and some local knowledge.

He was actually very lucky. He rolled at a notorious black area here. Our lads were not following at 80 mph .. but were at safe (albeit high-ish) speed

Oh sure ... we would have prosecuted had he stopped ..no insurance.. high as a kite and helium balloon on drugs.. not qualified ..but running like that - just makes a bad situation even worse. And yes - I know all the excuses too as in

fear of being caught..

fear of consequence for some..

thrill of "chase me!" for others

I'd love to know how to get through to this type though.

Wasted courage. :(

Of course.. "softly - softly - catchee monkey"

Seriously - the lad knew the area sort of and headed for our headache area in the hope of losing the officers . A worry as we know driver will lose the car or himself and our teams will scrape up pieces. We try to be careful - rather take alive and prosecute them than inform of a death or injury. The use of the poles was literally gob smacking though.

Hope the lad grows up this time.. get help too for the drugs He could lead a much more rewarding life - if he does.. he's wasting that courage and character at the moment.

If the chasing police "knew" who it was, then there was little point being close - after all, he wasn't going to abandon the car and do a runner was he?!
