Not sure if this has been mentioned BBC News

Quote:
New figures show road deaths down

The number of road deaths in Wales has dropped by more than a third over the last decade, according to Welsh Assembly Government statistics.
In 2005, 1,326 people were killed or seriously injured, a reduction of 34% since 1994-98, which is the average baseline for UK Government targets.

The number of children killed or seriously injured was 135 - 53% lower than the 1994-98 average.

The figures are based on road accidents involving reported personal injuries.

In 2005, 75% of all casualties were car, taxi or minibus users and 11% were pedestrians.

People killed or seriously injured -34%
Children killed or seriously injured -53%
Casualties aged 16-25 -7%
Pedestrian casualties -31%
Pedal cyclist casualties -41%

Just five per cent were motorcyclists or moped users and three per cent were cyclists.

Minister for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks, Andrew Davies, said: "The marked reduction in the number of people killed or injured on Welsh roads last year is extremely welcome - and very encouraging.

"The assembly government is striving to achieve a major improvement in road safety in Wales and the figures indicate that we are making significant headway.

"This, of course, should prompt us not to be complacent about road safety, but to redouble our efforts."

Why have'nt they published whether these stats are from camera sites or from proper residential roads. The mind boggles when they just generalise.

"This, of course, should prompt us not to be complacent about road safety, but to redouble our efforts."

Putting the cameras were real safety is an issue and not just to generate revenue would help road safety or even better use speed reminders as these seem to have more effect

Must be the national blow our trumpet week for the SCP.Warks are giving out some weirde figures (as compared to those in ABD,taken from National Stats )

more absurd claims

The most damning item is that about the police hours - when in parts of the county response time is days rather than hours.

The partnership's report for the year April 2005 to March 2006 also estimates the police spent nearly 9,000 hours - the equivalent of about three years' work for one officer - manning mobile safety cameras.

Yep that's a great use of Police time. My son was robbed of bank cards & wallet (at a gym in Warks), then had his accounts emptied. Despite the signing in at the gym, the cctv, the cctv in 2 banks and the withdrawal slip with fingerprints on it, oh yes and the thief leaving his mobile number on son and friends phones, what was done about it? Ziltch & 5 months later a letter saying the case had been closed. Now I know what they were all busy doing.

The Telegraph reported in March that one of the nation's top earning speed cameras is on the A45 between Ryton and Stretton.

I think this is the camera that was necessary at "suicide island". Lights put in and the problems solved. Has the camera been taken away, no chance it's a nice earner.

Odd isn't it? Everywhere you look there's some part of the country claiming to have made huge improvements in road safety...

...but Nationaly, the figures don't change much.

It makes me wonder where all these people go to kill themselves! They must run out of places soon!

Does anyone have the Wales figures broken down into "killed" and "seriously injured"? I wouldn't mind betting that it's just like Cumbria. "killed" will be pretty static and "seriously injured" will be down to "varying" reporting practices. As there are always far more "Seriously injured" than killed, it pays the SCPs to lump the two together.

You're quite right, they play around with SI's to much.

Link to statistics

Look at all road users at the bottom of the page, K have actually gone up since 2000, 1994-98 are avarage out so you can't compare.

Edited to remove the not out of you're not quite right

Is comparing one year in isolation with a 4-5, not even directly preceding, year average figure considered good statistical practice (if there is such a thing)?

Why 1994-98, perhaps this was a particularly poor period for road safety, and as such it's the holy grail of comparative figures for pro-scamera statisticians when touting the 'improvements' they've made?

How did you find that? I'm interested in seeing if I can find a breakdown of 94-98 and the 99 figures.

Greame, this is the link to the main Welsh Assembly Government Stats

This might be useful Transport Accidents and Casualties 2005

Roads and Trafic 2006

I've got stats broken down for 1995-2004 by county if you want them but I'll need your email address as they're Excel files. PM me if you're interested.

Cnuts. No offence to BiB on here but that is utterly deplorable. I wonder how many more people become alienated from the police each year because of the (non-)actions of lazy good-for-nothing bastards like those officers above. It seems they were right to stop calling it a force, but it isn't a service either. So depressing.
