The Safe Speed campaign demands a return to intelligent road safety

Reading that memo, particularly the 5 numbered points, leaves me feeling decidedly uneasy about Brunstrom's paradigm of the police force in a democratic state.

Firstly, and overarchingly throughout the memo, is the concept that opposing government policy is a bad thing, and should form a basis for non-cooperation. This should really set the warning bells ringing, since democracy requires dissent for it's very operation. Furthermore, the police force should be apolitical, not some sycophantic Gestapo for the ruling party!

Again, in the second point, he is concerned about members of the voting public lobbying their MPs!

The third point has been dealt with ad nauseam, and I am sure we can all agree that whatever information ever reported by the campaign, lawbreaking was never endorsed.

The fourth point alludes to some sort of whistleblowing exercise. Nobody likes a snitch, but if there are members of an organisation willing to speak externally about their concerns within that organisation then there is clearly a serious problem, if not with the organisation's principles themselves, then with the mechanism for employees to raise their concerns internally. If the organisation is transparent, then there's nothing to blow the whistle about!

The fifth point is back to some sort of undemocratic censorship exercise.

Consequently, and I know it has been mentioned before, I am left worrying whether Brunstrom's self-confessed obsession with speed enforcement predisposes him to practices and traits that would be considered undesirable, and even undemocratic, given his position.

Do y'know, I've never seen that letter before Paul. Now I'm not a football fan, but at the risk of seeming vulgar, maybe we should all now be singing, "You only sing when you're winning"!.......

Maybe in his position of: "God" he is not used to people argueing with him and providing a constructive arguement against his own. Perhaps Germany in the late 1930's would have suited him better. He certainly doesn't seem to believe in "free Speech" does he? That's Frightening from a Chief Constable.......

I think that this is a scary insite to the way those in power think at the moment.
