Mr Matthews has questioned the council’s plans to spend an extra £1.65 million on road-safety improvements, in response to the recent spate of deaths on Island roads. By improving roads he fears young people will drive even faster because they will be lulled into a false sense of security.
We've had more speed traps every year for at least seven years. If there's been a recent spate of deaths, that should tell him something about the effectiveness of that policy. There's certainly a big problem with young people driving around out of control: but it's the type who drive with the foot to the floor in first gear down a narrow street, probably at under 30mph but a danger to all around.
I feel a letter coming on.
