Another accident involving a police car.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/beds ... 766521.stm

Very sad, my condolences to the womans family.

I do get the impression that there is an increase in accidents with the police.
Are there any official figures that we can look at to see if this is a trend or not ?

They're not like Hampshire Police are they? Jumping red lights and speeding without lights and sirens?

They don't help some people. Driving along the M6 toll yesterday I had an unmarked volvo come past me at about warp 10 with lights/sirens going. I thought he may have been after the bimbo in the shopping trolley who'd driven past doing a fair whack.

Turned out he wasn't - after about 30 seconds she finally noticed the police car planted on her rear bumper and moved out of L3 and he continued on.

Also noticed they were doing some sort of major operation on the M6 Toll yesterday. I saw 3 marked and 3 unmarked cars each of which had pulled a "victim".

You're putting me off moving to Hampshire Steve, are they like that around Southampton only or is this a county-wide thing. (excluding pompey)

Hi Firefly,
I remember reading in a newspaper article last year that something like 117 deathes were caused by " people being pursued by the police or having been in recent contact with the police" At the time it seemed strange phraseology and I meant to dig deeper. This is something like 3% of fatalities. I did hear that some forces try not to get involved in dangerous chases - but it's a hard one to call.

That will perhaps include those who continued to drive with gross stupidity when the police stopped the pursuit on safety grounds or they successfully lost them. But they still get added to the statistics.

At the risk of being seen as very un-PC I subscribed to the Darwin Awards' take on these matters. If you drive like a moron and you die it's no bad thing you've been removed from the gene pool. The only persons to feel sorry for are the owners of the car they stole to kill themselves in and any property that got damaged doing it.

Hi Barkstar,
In many ways I agree with you. Sadly its the innocent that are often the victims of somebody elses stupidity and selfishness.

Given that only something like 4%, or so, of accidents are due to "exceeding the speed limit", this suggests that a substantial proportion of them are due to police accidents, or rogue drivers.
