M4 tops accident blackspot list

Part of the M4 is the worst accident blackspot in the West of England, a new survey has suggested.
The stretch of motorway between J20 eastbound to J18 has seen 44 reported accidents so far this year.

About 16 incidents were also registered on the westbound section of the M4 between Leigh Delamere and J18.

The A417 northbound from Birdip to The Air Balloon, Crickley Hill, has seen 17 incidents since New Year's Day, traffic information service Keep Moving said.

Since January, more than 2,600 accidents have occurred on 38 principal roads in the region, an average of 70 per road.

Alex Petrie, from Keep Moving, said: "Road safety statistics identify points where injuries or fatalities have occurred and clearly speed cameras have an extremely valuable role in reducing these statistics.

"Our research shows that the stretches of road with the highest frequency of incidents are generally motorway stretches with high volumes of users.

"In all but a few cases, speed cameras are not present on these stretches."

Could it be the case that once people exit the camera-ed section of the M4, they drive faster and more recklessly than they normally would, in order to make up time?

Nothing to do with the extra 'crawler lanes' that have been added in both directions heading up the hill to J18 (4th lane added that merges into L3?!). Birdlip is also a nightmare due to the gradient. Trucks have to slow to a crawl some times and there have been times where I've had to drop to 2nd to get up it. The roundabout at the Balloon's also a nightmare.

Cameras will just make things worse (yet again)

Hi,
Note - they never say how many accidents occur above the speed limit. Its the classic catch all it must be speeding.

The idea that reducing limits and/or enforcing them with cameras as a catch-all solution for any motoring problem is getting such an entrenched idea that it sounds ridiculous and irrational.

It reminds me of the 'Blackadder' episode where the doctor prescribes 'a course of leeches' for anything and everything a patient has wrong with them.

Maybe the sketch could be used as an analogy to get the point across to the people who still don't get it......

Some good quotes in here....

'Most dangerous' roads revealed

Britain's most dangerous road for travelling on is a section of highway in Lancashire, according to a survey.

The 15-mile stretch of the A682 has had almost 100 deaths or serious injuries in the last decade.

The report was compiled by the Road Safety Foundation for the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP).

Head researcher Dr Joanne Hill said a further 16 road sections were adjudged to present a persistent "medium to high risk" to road users.

The section of the A682, between junction 13 of the M65 and Long Preston, was the only road in the highest risk category.

The survey found that the second worst road was the A54 Congleton to Buxton in Derbyshire, with the third worst being the A683 from junction 34 of the M6 to Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria.

Dr Hill said: "The good news from the survey is that many of Britain's authorities have brought in countermeasures to tackle the higher risk routes in their areas.

"Most are quick, simple and cheap, involving little more than adopting modern signing, hazard markings and junction layouts."

Dr Hill said that the A682 "fails on every collision type".

Rail crash equivalent

These included junction and access road crashes, collisions with rigid roadside objects, overtaking crashes, pedestrian and cyclist collisions and motorcycle crashes.

"The death-toll on this stretch of road is the equivalent of five major rail crashes within 10 years," she said.

"The foundation's consultation with local authorities over the past four years has consistently shown that lack of funding is the principal reason why they do not tackle accident numbers on their roads on the scale that could make a major difference.

"Other local authorities have undoubtedly saved lives - often by the simple application of white paint."

EuroRAP chairman John Dawson said: "The UK is now falling behind those countries it used to lead only a few years ago because its pace in applying the results of research into safe road design lags behind the best.

"Cutting road deaths requires combined action to improve driver behaviour, to improve vehicle crash performance, and to provide safety features on the roads themselves.

"We need five-star drivers in five-star cars on five-star roads."

Ernest, after posting 'Most dangerous' roads revealed
at; http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14878

I then noticed your posting of it here.

I will leave the posting I made, as a separate topic, with a separate heading, but would understand if the moderators considered it superflous and decided to removed it.
