Not 'vandals'
Published on 05 January 2005

I'VE just read the article on the speed cameras that have been yanked up out of their footings (News, December 30) and I feel I must question your use of the word "vandals" to describe the people who have done this.
Could they not just be disaffected motorists who, sickened with the ever increasing usage of "scameras"and the spin of the "scamera partnerships" have decided to take the fight back to those who would have us all walking?
The term "vandals" implies a mindless act.
I put it to you that there is nothing remotely "mindless" or "vandal-like" in the actions of these heroes (for that is what they are) who risk their liberty to prevent the greedy "partnerships" (The Mob in any other words) from collecting their cut.
Far from condemning these people I applaud them for having some guts.
Speed cameras don't make us safe, they make the simpleminded among us think we're safe, no questions asked.
The sooner the rest of us start to question why deaths on the roads are rising (in spite of all the extra scameras) the sooner this farcical money scam will be brought to a stop.
