Just in case anyone cares but hasn't noticed:

Borough of Poole wrote:
ROAD TRAFFIC (TEMPORARY RESTRICTIONS) ACT 1991

THE POOLE (DORSET WAY) (TOWER PARK ROUNDABOUT TO TRIGON ROAD FOOTBRIDGE) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION) ORDER 2007

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Borough and County of the Town of Poole, the Highway Authority is satisfied that traffic on the said road should be restricted and intends not less than seven days from the date of this Notice to make an Order, the effect of which is that no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to proceed at a greater speed than 30 mph on both sides of the carriageway on Dorset Way, (the length between Tower Park Roundabout to Trigon Road Footbridge). A contraflow system will be operated over the same length of road when necessary for the works to be undertaken.

The proposed restrictions are required for safety reasons while refurbishment work is undertaken to the Oakdale North and South Bridges.

The proposed Order is operative between 3 June and 20 July 2007.

THE POOLE (DORSET WAY, UPTON BY-PASS AND HOLES BAY ROAD) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION) ORDER 2007

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Borough and County of the Town of Poole, the Highway Authority is satisfied that traffic on the said road should be restricted and intends not less than seven days from the date of this Notice to make an Order, the effect of which is that no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to proceed at a greater speed than 30 mph on both sides of the carriageway on Dorset Way, Upton By-Pass and the Holes Bay Road (for 400m from the Holes Bay North Roundabout).

The proposed restriction is required for safety reasons while construction of a new Fire Station is undertaken at Marshes End.

The proposed Order is operative between 2 July 2007 and 2 December 2008.

The Orders are operative for the periods mentioned above and will continue in force for the statutory period of eighteen months if required. If the works are not completed within the statutory period the Order may be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

These roads are all good quality two lane dual carriageways and there have recently been roadworks on the Dorset Way requiring no speed limits whatsoever.

Yes, it will be good to get off these "quality two lane dual carriageways" and get onto the country lanes where I can really go fast.

I got a reply. It basically said... Thanks for your e-mail. We advertise restrictions because we have to by law. There is no legal reason for us to listen to objections so we aren't going to.

Ok, I didn't think of this before...
At least one of the roads leading up to the Dorset Way has a 30mph restriction on it with street lamps. The Dorset Way its self has street lamps. Guess how they changed the signage to make it NSL > 30? They removed the one single NSL sign.

They put up a :30: sign the day after I wrote that last message.

Now they have extended the limit for a long way into the two lane stretch.

Doing 80 in a 30 limit isn't bad, is it? :hehe:
I don't think anyone else was doing less than 60.

I never actually posted the council's response to my first e-mail... Here it is:

Quote:
Thank you for your email regarding the Temporary Speed Restriction advertised on Dorset Way.

Under the terms of the 1984 Road Traffic Act it is necessary to give notice of a temporary speed restriction in the press and on site. There is, however, no procedure for objections.

The 30 mph temporary limit has been advertised for the following reasons.

Chapter 8 of the trafic signs manual recommends a temporary speed limit of 40 mph whilst a contraflow is in operation subject to specific site risk assessments.

A 900mm buffer zone is required to separate the two lanes of traffic which leaves running lanes of 3.05m wide. This, coupled with the layout of the site i.e. traffic leaving and joining on the slip roads, including diverted traffic, and the proximity of the ends of the contraflow to other junctions, mean that it is considered that a 30mph speed limit is appropriate for this site.

The second paragraph is the best bit. "We don't have to listen to you, so we won't."

Well they had the signage right for almost a day.

There must be less than 5% compliance on the 2 lane parts of the road. Nearer 0% I think.

Someone else put up a sign!

I've joined and posted (even though I actually live about 1/2 mile into Somerset - I drive into/across Dorset most days)!

Love that video of doing 30 in the roadworks.... very relaxing.

Today the slowest people were doing about 50 after the contraflow. But then it was raining.
