VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO WIELD SPEED 'GUNS'

10:30 - 28 July 2007

Great Glen: Community Speed Watch is likely to arrive in the village.

The parish council is considering joining the project, which elsewhere has reduced traffic speed and increased road safety.

Great Glen must meet certain criteria. It must have a suitable and safe location for speed checks, there must be at least 200 villagers in support and at least six people must volunteer to take part in training to use the speed detection equipment.

The training will take place in the village hall. The scheme can operate in locations subject to a speed limit of 30mph or 40mph.

The details of all vehicles exceeding the speed limits are passed to the police, who send letters to the registered keepers, outlining the concerns of the residents and requesting them to keep to the limit in the future.

For details, call Liz Hawkes, acting clerk to the parish council, on 0116 259 3004.

Anybody want to go for training?

I don't understand this. The village is a spot on the map and it already has a speed camera on the one and only main road. It has also been by-passed by the A6 so there is bugger-all traffic. Must be a lot of old scroats looking for something to do before they die.

A big claim. Got any evidence for this?

this is something that others have tried and failed miserably on.

the police cant even respond quickly to crimes like robbery, assault and the old favourite "people acting suspiciously" - so why suddenly can they find the initiative to get this!

if they policed the tax, insurance, licence and unroadworthy cars more effectively then most of the perps that are "likely" to be flying thru these villages - would be off the roads...

making the roads a safe place doesnt mean just picking on people doing 35 in a 30...
