But the tabloids exposed yesterday. But it seems a Zebra Crossing costs £114K to construct.
Tory MP Oliver Letwin made some enquiries into Highways Agency expenditure and was a bit cross over the cost of "crossing the roads".
Labour to paint the stripes costs £87K.

It takes two weeks to paint the stripes? Drop the kerb .. erect a couple of Belishas
Blimey.. I could treat a dozen patients on top cost drug for this cash alone.

Plus me own wages and some more nurses and junior medics
£16K on equipement.

and £11K to design what is, after all, a pretty standard design of dropped kerb, paint, zig-zag marks in the area designated for this work. Even with some audit work for best place to construct the crossing. - it's almost beyong comprehension that a bit of tweaking on a computerised graphics/engineering programme costs so much cash even from scratch design.
The Highways Agency claimed this cost was based on fully signalled crossings with refuge and not a zebra crossing.. Only Letwin apparently did his homework and found this to be standard costs per the Sexpress account of this story
