Australian drivers hit below belt

Images of road deaths have not curbed speeding, says the RTA
A new Australian ad campaign is seeking to reduce road deaths by questioning the manhood of speeding drivers.
The series of TV ads shows women shaking their pinkie finger - a gesture used to symbolise a small penis - as speeding male motorists race past.

The $A1.9m (£805,400, US$1.6m) campaign aims to make speeding socially unacceptable among young drivers.

The "Speeding. No-one Thinks Big of You" campaign will run on TV, in cinemas, at bus shelters and online.

The shock tactics of previous adverts that showed disturbing images of death and injury in road crashes have not worked, says the New South Wales state government authority behind the ads, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

Exposure to "computer games, modern media ... and horror films" had desensitised many young males to the violent images of those campaigns, RTA spokesman John Whelan told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The new ads include one young driver revving his engine and rushing through traffic lights in front of two young women and another racing past a female pedestrian.

After both incidents the women wave their pinkies in slow motion with knowing glances.

"We will do what we feel we have to, to get the message through," Mr Whelan said.

Speeding is a factor in about 40% of road deaths in NSW each year, according to RTA figures.

The ad campaign coincides with the introduction of new restrictions on learner drivers, including a ban on all mobile phone use, limits on the number of young passengers allowed and tougher speeding penalties.

Ah, Australia. That's where King Cnut emigrated to.

They will soon discover that this campaign won't work either.

It kinda makes you wonder where these peoples brains actually reside.

I mean, whats the size of a guys tackle got to do with his speed?
And if theyre suggesting that faster drivers have smaller willys, then maybe someone should tell the guy who drove Thrust ssc that with a straight face..." yeah mate youve only got a tiny todger".....sure....

Id suggest that its the men with bigger todgers that are the ones driving faster, not the limp dicked individuals that think "20's plenty".
Grow a pair of balls and give it some right foot i say to Mr Whelan, ya small willied pussyboy. :P

Absolutely. This sort of rubbish makes road safety into a bad joke. It marks the people promoting it as idiots and all road safety messages get just a litte less credible.

The only people who are stupid enough to believe it (a smallish group) are the ones that needed important and meaningful messages.

This sort of campaign is merely silly and does nothing to promote a better climate of road safety involving all road users - not just males who these halfwits consider are driving too fast.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Humm
Is this from the same individuals who brought you
“If you drive a fast car with a big engine you tiny tackle.”
If you had the balls to buy a powerful car you wouldn’t say that.

I wonder how acceptable this would be if they were making an offensive remark + stereotype about women drivers?

My guess is not very.

Yes. How about "All women who speed are lesbians." Should go down well. :D

Yup, imagine the outrage if they proclaimed that 'all woman speeders have wide vaginas', not a tasteful or accurate message for our supposedly civilised society. Then again, whoever accused the Ozzies of being civilised?

Yea.

Smallish in free thinking and intelligence. Smallish of penis. And lacking in vision to see beyond vacuous dogma. Hardly surprising from a country that has recently imposed a 80 limit on the 1,500 mile road from Alice Springs to Darwin...

well it was derestricted and we can hardly have that highlighting the stupidity being pushed in other states, can we?

How do they police that?
Is that 80 mph or 80 kph?

it's 130km/h (80mph) and I think the distance is 1500km not miles. Anyhoo... they police it by fitting a mobile radar to a cop car and then either hiding in the bushes if they're being lazy or cruising up and down the road zapping oncoming traffic.
When they're being really nasty they've also been known to use planes and marked bits of road.
Of course it's not going to save anyone because nobody in their right mind is going to travel several thousand km to get to a piece of derestricted road just to see how fast their car can go and those that are forced to drive on these roads are going to die from boredom. (think roads that are dead straight for miles on end with nothing but sand either side of them as far as the eye can see and you start to get the picture of just how monotonous it is to drive in the outback, and just how ridiculous it is being forced to do so at 100km/h everywhere else in the country).

I didn't know what the twerps meant by waggling their little fingers. I wondered if they'd been using them for some purpose (into which we need not inquire too deeply) and getting unsatisfactory results - so they were looking to the lads for some assistance.

If that silly lass in the picture is anything to go by, they'll be out of luck.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

At least in the UK we could have the poster-woman's car crushed for making an offensive gesture. Oh, wait, that only applies if the gesture is at the police.

This advert reminds me of Ben Bowman (played by George Kennedy) in the film "The Eiger Sanction":

Woman Journalist: Tell me, Mr. Bowman, in your opinion do these men climb to prove their manhood, or is it more a matter of compensating for inferiority feelings?
Ben Bowman: Lady, why don't you go get yourself screwed. It would do you a lot of good.

<applause for the man>

Best wishes all,
Dave.

:scratchchin:

Daily Post wrote:
A COMPANY boss was pulled over by police and warned that his van could be seized and crushed after he made a cheeky gesture towards officers.

[snip]

The notice warns that he was “causing alarm, distress or annoyance” at the wheel and that if he repeats the gesture in the next 12 months, his vehicle could be seized.
