A NURSERY nurse was fined £60 yesterday for holding an apple in her hand while driving around a bend after police used a spotter aircraft, a helicopter and a patrol car to win the case.

Northumbria Police went to extraordinary lengths to gather evidence against Sarah McCaffery, 23, who had missed breakfast and grabbed the apple to eat on her way to work. Magistrates ruled that she had not been in full control of her car. Miss McCaffery was also ordered to pay £100 costs at the tenth court hearing of the case.

Er, I don't advocate eating apples while driving, but this is absolutely over the top and likely to further erode respect for the police.

I think my understanding of it that she was given a £30 ticket but wanted to go to court about it. Well thats what Radio 1 said this morning.
Still what a waste of both the polive and courts time!!

"BACK OFF. I'VE GOT A RIPE GOLDEN DELICIOUS AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!!

That ridiculous use of police resources kind of reminds me of that Monty Python sketch, "How to defend yourself against someone armed with a piece of fruit."

Would Northumbia Constabulary care to comment on the number of burglaries, armed robberies, muggings and carjackings that went unnoticed while they were pursuing this dangerous apple-eating criminal?
