Whilst this is of course good news they fail to recognise the effect of the wettest summer for 6 years

Just ten motorcyclists were killed in 2004
The number of people killed in motorcycle crashes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has dropped to its lowest level in six years, police say.
Ten motorcyclists died on roads across the two counties in 2004, compared to 33 in 2003, and 22 in 2002.

The fall comes after the 2003 rise sparked police and council campaigns to tackle and publicise the problem.

Weekend patrols were put in place on popular motorcycle routes, including the A339, A272 and the A32.

'Ten too many'

Members of Hampshire Constabulary's roads policing unit also took part in a joint operation with other forces across the South East.

Pc Mick Gear, the force's "BikeSafe" co-ordinator, said: "There has been a remarkable drop in the number of motorcyclists that have been killed on roads across the two counties so far this year.

"We are pleased that our efforts appear to be working. What we mustn't do now is become complacent.

"Ten people still died in motorcycle collisions in 2004 and that is ten too many."

Yes. I did half the mileage last year on a bike than I did in 03.

From what I can remember 03 stats were poor.

At least it wasn't a scamera squad claiming a victory for camera enforcement.. :!:

Don't speak too soon, I'm sure as soon as they can get a press release out they will.

2004 was a wet year and normal summer activities were reduced. Proof is in the "beer lake" discounts seen at Christmas, less barbecues and outdoor activities.

as predicted by myself in July! Either I'm a genius or the police and camera partnerships are predictable to a fault.

I think the reason for the rise in motorcycle deaths can largely be attributed to the long hot summer we enjoyed last year. Since for the majority of motorcyclists riding a bike is a leisure pursuit this probably meant a significant increase in total miles covered by motorcycles.

Of course the police reaction to this is a clampdown on motorcyclists, and whilst this could well be constructive a little bit of education pointed towards car drivers wouldn't go amiss as well.

If the summer continues in its present vein I would expect a fall in total motorcycling miles this year and this may see a reduction in casulties. This could of cause be sighted as a success for the police clampdown on popular biking routes, although maybe I'm getting ahead of myself there

Nice one on the prediction though...03 was a great year for riding weatherwise.

I'm sorry but they are lying Bast**ds.

The number of 'me too' initiatives that started at the back end of the summer when they realised the death rate was way down when compared to the previous year is huge.

They all cashed in on crack downs - hampshire didn't start until aug/sep time

Don't get me wrong I'm a bikesafe instructor, but c'mon each force maybe runs 5-6 session for 20-30 riders a time. Given the accident/exposure rate and the benefit affect of advanced driver training approx 20-25% (of which bikesafe only covers a little). means that to get a >60% fatality reduction they'd need to have trained or affected >50,000 riders.

I don't think so.

Baseline their data.
- test passes were down
- bike sales were down
- mileages were down

= risk per mile is the same, but fewer overall miles

It's dangerous, because if we have a hot summer this year what are they gonna say? trouble is we'll have had a general election by them

Sadly 3 people died while on mortorbike (and moped)s in accidents in one week in January 2005 in Southampton area.

http://www.thisishampshire.net/hampshir ... S10ZM.html

http://www.thisishampshire.net/hampshir ... S11ZM.html

That's 30% of the entire 10 total deaths for 2004 in the whole of Hampshire.

Meanwhile most of the Govt efforts are focused elsewhere...........

In some ways these scameraships are icons to false gods.
