M61 UPDATE: Road re-opens after boy killed in crash
By Rob Devey

THE M61 has re-opened after an eight-year-old boy was killed when the car he was in over-turned.

The motorway was closed by police following the accident which happened at 12.40pm between the Bolton West Services and junction eight at Chorley.

It re-opened at 5.40pm after hours of traffic chaos.

The boy was one of six people including four children in the black Land Rover Freelander when the incident happened north-bound between the Bolton West Services and junction eight at Chorley.

Emergency services rushed to the scene about one and a half miles from the Chorley turn-off.

Horwich firefighters were first to arrive and found the four-by-four on its roof on the hard-shoulder.

They said they tried to resuscitate the boy who was lying on the ground but it was too late to save him and paramedics said he was dead at the scene.

The female driver, who suffered serious head injuries, was also given first-aid by firefighters.

She was fitted with a neck collar and put on a spinal board before being rushed to the Preston Royal Infirmary by the North West Air Ambulance.

Four other people including a woman in the passenger seat and three girls in the back of the car were also taken to the hospital.

All five casualties are said to be in a stable condition and the hospital said none of the injuries were life threatening.

Watch Officer Glyn McGann, of Horwich Fire Station, said: "When we got there the boy was lying on the ground and the woman driver was squatting down on the ground.

"The other four people were on their feet and the initial indication was that they were suffering from shock and had cuts and bruises and we gave first-aid to two of them.

"The vehicle had rolled onto its roof on the hard-shoulder and it looked like most of the windows had been smashed.

"It wasn't clear how the vehicle had ended up on its roof but there was no indication it had collided with another vehicle."

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said: "It appears the Land Rover lost control for reasons unknown but we do not believe any other vehicles were involved.

"We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, especially people travelling in the opposite direction on the southbound carriageway."

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "Unfortunately, this incident involved a fatality and the police have to be allowed time to investigate the causes of serious accidents.

"Our contractors also need time, once the police investigation has finished, to clear the scene and make sure the carriageway is safe.

"However, we would like to thank drivers for their patience today."

Anyone able to help can call police on 01772 410736 quoting log number 78SQ.

4:18pm today

I also appeal for the folk involved and Lancs police.. If you can help.. DO!

Again... my sincere condolences to the parents of this child. [/quote]
