PRIVATE SPEED CAMERAS FOR IRELAND
Country can expect wave of speeding fines after private company gets contract to run cameras
Privatised speed cameras have been given the go ahead in Ireland, it has been reported.
The government has estimated that the privately owned speed cameras, which provide 6,000 hours of monitoring a month, will reduce road deaths by a fifth.
Ireland has so far been relatively speed camera free and the use of private cameras is understood to have been put on hold last year because running costs were estimated to be higher than originally thought.
The locations of the cameras will be selected by the Garda Traffic Bureau, which will have strategic control of their use.
Funding for the provision of the private cameras was approved by the Cabinet this week.
In a statement the Department of Justice said it would contact the preferred bidder with a view to starting contract negotiations.
