By Laura Clout An Olympic judo hope killed his girlfriend in a horrific car smash as he raced home from a night out, a court heard.

Harry Fenner, 19, tipped to represent Britain in the 2012 Games, was speeding at up to 70mph on a 40mph road when he lost control of his Ford Fiesta, it was said.

His 17-year-old student girlfriend Jade McKinnon never recovered consciousness and died of severe head injuries. Fenner – who sat in the dock with his head in his hands – was driving in Woking, Surrey, in May last year with Jade in the front passenger seat, Guildford Crown Court heard.

Michael Riley, prosecuting, said the car mounted a kerb, hit a fence and came to a halt on its side. Witness Michael Leesh, who knew the pair, found Fenner calling an ambulance.

Fenner claimed to witnesses that a BMW had tried to run him off the road, the jury heard.

Mr Riley told how he said: “It was on my side of the road driving towards us.

“After the accident it stopped and some Asian males got out. They said something like, ‘Oh s***’ and drove off. I can’t believe they drove off.”

However, the court heard that other drivers said that they had not seen another car being driven recklessly.

Tests at the scene found no evidence of any other vehicle being involved and showed the Fiesta was going at 58 to 71mph.

Mr Riley added: “The way it was travelling fell far below the standard of a careful and competent driver.”

Fenner and Jade had been in Woking town centre at 1am and then gave their friend Joshua Murphy a lift home. He told the court that Jade was drunk but it did not appear that Fenner was under the influence.

Fenner, of Pyrford, Woking, denies causing death by dangerous driving. The trial continues.

Mad Moggie.

Although an unfortunate case, what point are you highlighting by this posting?
