Police hunt motorist who blew up speed camera with a BOMB Here

Many a miffed driver has received a fine in the post after being photographed breaking the speed limit.
But one motorist has taken his dislike of speed cameras to the extreme by attaching a bomb to one in the dead of night and blowing it to pieces.
Police were today hunting the person who blew up a yellow roadside camera, leaving parts strewn across a road in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
Residents living along the Bishopstoke Road were woken up by the sound of an explosion in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

Bomb: Police are hunting the motorist who blew up a speed camera in Hampshire
When they peered out of their windows they saw a cloud of smoke coming from the destroyed camera.
Emergency services rushed to the scene amid initial fears the explosion had actually come from a nearby petrol station.

Local resident Tina McCarthy was woken up by the deafening bang at 2.30am.
She said: 'A massive explosion woke me up and when I looked outside I could see a huge cloud of smoke coming from the camera.
'There had been thunder and lightning that evening but this was so much louder - at first I thought someone had shot at it.
'It's quite worrying to think that someone has these kind of explosive devices and can plant them so close to our homes.'

Police are now investigating the incident and are checking CCTV in the area to try and find the culprit.
Hampshire Police's acting Chief Inspector Kelly Whiting said: 'This is totally irresponsible behaviour by whoever committed this offence.
'There could have been a potential risk to passers-by although this was minimised by the time of the incident.
'There was a risk to the nearby petrol station and the attack could have had serious consequences.'
The attack comes as officials in Swindon, Wiltshire, confirmed that the number of motorists caught speeding has halved since they banned fixed cameras in the town.
In the three months between August 1 and October 31, 2009, just 1,033 motorists received Notices of Intended Prosecution after being caught by mobile cameras.
But in the same three-month period in 2008 when the fixed position Gatso cameras were in place, the figure was 2,227.

Look at the comments section (285 comments at time of typing) and sort by rating. I did and this is what I see:

Out of the top 100 positively rated comments, only 2 didn't give a clear opinion of speed cameras or the act (or 5 in the top 200, I think one was from Stewie Von Drashek); all others were clearly overwhelmingly in favour of this act, or against speed cameras.

What was that about the public being in support of speed cameras?

Suspect ,if asked ,or polled, the general public would have difficulty distinguishing between distaste for this Givernment , or the camera mentality -that thinks that remote control of the public works .Could have told the right Hon Gent ,that when cameras move in -the lawless take steps to conceal their ID -we saw this in our street with the lawless element( can't call them Yobs/yoofs- that infringes their rights) -when we started to use CCTV -they just used hats/balaclavas etc .It's like safety on the roads -you need a police presence to uphold law /order and road safety -cameras just dont work -it's like an old Tory PR leaflet -"LABOUR ISN'T WORKING" -the justice system is following suite ,to be followed by the rest of the UK workforce .
And if you don't believe it - wait till some little yob (OOPS SORRY , young deprived male bloke) decides to throw a brick against your P&J parked in the drive and you try to apprehend him ,to get arrested for using excessive FORCE .YEP -that confirms your in Britain ,today .

Nowt to do with me. I know its three villages away but I was in bed with flu. Honest Guv.
It still amazes me the ones in Bitterne and Millbrook are not attacked yet posh bishopstoke gets done.
Hampshire have been partucularly non compliant with rules. The county has been obstructive to justice.

Funny just how reactionary the posh can get ? :D

Perhaps we need more posh reactions- after all the Tories might then JUST LISTEN .( Where do they get their cash,at the end of the day),and lets face it - they're going to be next in power .

They won't listen.
They'll do what they're told to do.
In any case, single fixed cameras are being replaced by specs systems over the next few years.
Then road pricing (in whatever form) is due soon after.
I keep pointing this out: Your elected reps are not the ones making policy, they're just the front persons.
They cannot go against european policy which is already moving towards road pricing for all road users.
I many ways the policy towards road users in this country leads europe. And many of the european policies were initiated by this country....by conservative as well as labour.
And none of the major parties are going to dump the eu.

I just followed the link, and it tells me NO comments have been made, and "be the first" to comment?????!!!!!

It has been done with a firework - the damage is not that great to indicate a significant explosive type.
It appears to have been taped just below the peaked roof of the cabinet - which has been peeled back.
It is only thin metal, and not that well made from the look of it.

Amateurs! They don't have to risk the ire of the public by making such a noise in the dead of night or risk being caught! Get out and VOTE instead!

Chances are they will have left some prints, and their ladder will be in the garage of one of those adjacent houses! :bunker:

I don't condone this sort of activity, but I do not agree with police spokespersons blowing it up out of proportion either!

In Arizona press .. we regularly read of

CAMERA SHOT AT DAWN! gatso1: :gatso2: :gatso3:

I cannot understand why I feel no sense of sorrow or anger at the violence even when I read of these stories. We did wonder if they blindfolded the camera before shooting it..  More "Schadenfreude" perhaps?? Maybe..

By the way . .this was happening before we arrived und neither of us like guns.. so it ist not us .. :o

SO-OHHHH-OH!.. there as well as here .. very few folk shed a tear for the demise or plight of the Gatso. Some folk may think we are not surprised.. we cannot possibly comment

It ist not that we condone.. but the act of violent vandalism on a speed camera does not seem able to invoke the same outrage majority of folk appear to feel toward other acts of vandalism on street/urban furniture. Now that ist the really :yikes: scary aspect (especially for the authorities) in these ever-increasing stories of such agressive camera vandalism.

Now .. I have hot warming soup to heat up for the troops who come back after snowball fights.. (I wonder if you can be prosecuted for hurling a snowball at a Gatso? :scratchchin:)

Vandelisim, to my mind (and I assume in the minds of most) is normally something that is an act of sensless and wanton destruction that leaves socioty worse off.

Try as I might, I cannot bring myself to feel that the elimination of a speed scam fulfills that requirement.

(except insofar as the B'stards will only put up another one and use taxes to pay for it)

How else one might describe such an act I am not sure.

But ,if he /she chooses to go via M40 and up the Fosse Way to the A5 , turning off at Litchfield to pick up the A38 ,I fear they may ( as one explorer put it) "be away for not a little time"

Seing as it is now reported to be a firework -and we celibrate another failed event, where explosives were used, with bonfires and explosives - why not combine the two events -to be held every NOV 5 ,at a Gatso near you :gatso3: :gatso3:  :D

I don't condone vandalism ... but I agree with Dusty here; this is not vandalism.
I also don't condone taxation without representation.

What happened here was someone who felt that all other communications channels were useless to him, sent a message in the only way he felt was left to be heard.

The pity is that has been misunderstood, misconstrued, and misrepresented by those in power as an act of 'vandalism' against the State.

It is a form of protest. Not that I'm for this particular form of protest, mind you; there are more articulate ways, but although I won't condone this protester's actions, I hope the masses understand what was meant.

Obviously, those whose opinion stops at "Vandalism, and/or another crime against the State" are exercising their doublethink muscles ...

It's ironic when you think that all they had to do was slip their underpants over the camera - not inject them with chemicals too!

Maybe they feared there would be too much forensic evidence in the underpants!

I still favour vaseline on the lens. Just enough to give the pics a blurry soft-porn look to them.
