First suburban average speed cameras turned on in Poole

The first average speed cameras in a suburban area in the UK have been switched on in Dorset.

The cameras, which measure speed over a stretch of road, were turned on outside Springdale First school in Poole.

Until now, average speed cameras have only been seen through road works on motorways.

The school was chosen for the six-month trial by nearby engineering firm Siemens, which is running the system and collating all the information.

However no offending motorists will be prosecuted until the system gets Home Office approval.

Mark Bonner-Moris, of Siemens, said: "Essentially we cannot prosecute them because the system has not got Home Office approval.

Child designs

"Ultimately, once the system is Home Office-approved, which will hopefully be early next year, they can be prosecuted.

"Until that time, all we're trying to do is demonstrate the effectiveness of the system."

Children at the school have designed road signs to accompany the new cameras.

Schoolgirl Eryn Young, whose design is being used, said: "It's a message for cars to slow down so people can cross the road and no-one can get hurt."

Head teacher Ruth leach said: "Road safety is an integral part of the curriculum and has been for many years, so this is just a part of that message for the children."

I wonder if there are any other initiatives being applied too, such as teaching children to cross properly (or encouraging guardians to take responsibility).

You see, right there's the worrying thing, out of the mouth of a child.

Now that traffic is slower the risk has been removed. But it hasn't.

So those on the A616 near Stocksbridge are my imagination then?

Quality reporting yet again.

...and will they operate 24 hours per day outside the school to "protect the children" at midnight? Of course they will.

So let's think about this. Springdale First School is probably like most Infant/Junior schools in that a lot of children arrive/depart by car at up to 4 times per day. These cars are generally driven by mothers who park all over the place and make a terrible hazard. However, these hazard causing drivers will not be touched by the average speed cameras. They will drive up (fast?) to the school, stop for a bit, drive off fast and be totally immune.

If you need enforcement at a school, a policeman present at random times is the best. This is an inappropriate place for average speed monitoring. Speeding outside schools is generally not a problem when children are around.

What is needed is road safety awareness training for children and parents. This would be effective everywhere and not just at the school gate.

TBH Springdale Rd is usually very slow moving at school run time. That whole bit of Broadstone sort of seizes up...

And the permanent SPECS to enforce the 50 limit through Junction 26 of the clockwise M60 at Bredbury.

It says "first suburban", not first.
The "first" of very many.

So what will happen is that while the kids are leaving, entering school (i.e. the most dasngerous times), no-one will probably get caught "speeding" but for the other 20Hours of the day and weekend, motorists will get caught for exceeding a speed limit, which is probably to low for the road at these times anyway.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

They are not even the first suburban set, weren't one of the first SPECS on a suburban DC in Nottingham?

Just breaking-in the plebs to the idea.
I said some time ago that things would morph as the science and technology was developed.
People said at the time that they would never happen because of the need to bury loads of wires.
Well, loads of wires have been buried, and loads of gsm tech has been developed along with wifi etc.
Loads more stuff is being installed (most large rail stations now have anpr systems operated by BTP and feeding into the national police systems) and loads more is going to be installed.
Every anpr system is also a cctv system as well as having the capability to be a specs system.
CCTV featuring face-recognition is online now, and more systems will also feed into that.
Pretty soon both you and your car will be able to be followed from start-of-journey to end-of-journey, seamlessly (well...)
At least speed cameras were "locally" accountable. The new set-ups are outside local control, and most seem to be outside of any control.
