Speed camera introduced on Worcester road

A mobile speed camera is to operate on a stretch of road in Worcester where there have been 14 collisions causing injury over the past three years.

Two of the incidents on the A449 Ombersley Road between the Claines roundabout and the Barbourne Road junction have involved serious injury.

The camera is due to come into use next week.

Data collected in July 2008 showed 15% of drivers went at more than 36mph in what is a 30mph limit area.

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia said the move was in direct response to the number of collisions on the stretch of road and "the speeds that some motorists feel it is acceptable to travel at".

Dave Clee, safer roads manager for Worcestershire County Council, said: "It is important to reduce vehicle speeds wherever limits apply, even more so on a route such as this where large numbers of pedestrians and pedal cyclists are at risk."

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is made up of 13 partner agencies, including the county council and police.

This is a classic example of the SCPs trying to capitalise on the illusion of Regression To The Mean
