A judge has slammed a police force after it initially chose to not prosecute a senior officer for speeding.
Helen Chamberlain was caught doing 79mph on a 50mph stretch of the A6097 Epperstone bypass between Epperstone and Oxton, but was let off with just a warning when she was pulled over by Nottinghamshire Police.
The constable that gave her the roadside caution was later overruled by senior colleagues, who reported the incident.
Chamberlain initially disputed the charge, saying that the equipment was faulty, but then entered a guilty plea when she came up in front of magistrates.
District Judge Timothy Devas said: "I hope this case, which has been a terrible ordeal for Mrs Chamberlain, will leave a message that will cascade down all levels of the force that they must not make decisions like this.
"The public have a right to know what went on at the roadside. Why did the PC take it upon himself to suggest there would be no prosecution for someone doing 79 on a 50mph road? Can you imagine in your wildest dreams the police saying to us you are not going to be prosecuted?
"Quite rightly the public might think it's because of who she was, and that doesn't reflect well on Notts Constabulary."
Chamberlain was given six points on her licence, and ordered to pay a £710 fine, costs of £800 and a victim surcharge of £15.
I am quite sure there is a lot going on behind the scenes of this case ...
