Drivers are being urged to slow down after 70% of interviewees on an annual road survey admitted exceeding the speed limit by 5mph or more in built-up areas.

The results were revealed in the Road Safety Monitor survey conducted by the Department of the Environment.

It showed 83% of drivers believe speeding is one of the biggest causes of death and serious injury on our roads.

Environment Minister Edwin Poots said: “I welcome the fact that more and more drivers understand the dangers of speeding. But we must not be complacent. We should not be in any doubt that a hardcore speeding attitude still exists, especially among young males.

“There are still drivers on our roads who believe there is nothing wrong with driving at excessive speed. The consequence of such has been all too evident, particularly on rural roads and in built-up areas.

“Driving fast gives less time to react to stop and when a vehicle goes out of control the devastating consequences are greater.” Meanwhile, six-in-10 people here (59%) don’t think the penalties for drink-driving are harsh enough, according to the new statistics. And the survey reveals that more than four-in-10 motorists who drink (43%) said they couldn’t drink any alcohol without it affecting their driving — yet almost a quarter of motorists who drink admitted they would normally drive after one drink (24%).

The poll also investigates attitudes to speeding — with almost half of motorists admitting they would break the speed limit on a motorway (47%).

And 17% of motorists interviewed admitted they would normally exceed the speed limit on roads in a built-up area, 20% on roads outside a built-up area and 32% on dual carriageways.

Again mistakenly equating exceeding the speed limit with driving at excessive speed
