Crawley Observer here
Son left speechless over Worth Road ‘standstill’
Published on Sun Apr 17 09:00:59 BST 2011

A MAN whose late father was seriously injured in a Worth Road accident said he was speechless that promised safety improvements have not been made – despite £52,800 in fines being clocked by a temporary speed camera.

Three serious accidents and a Crawley Observer campaign led to a mobile camera being placed at the notorious accident hotpot in August 2009.

It has since issued 1,887 speeding notices, though only 880 fines have been paid.

John Wallsgrove said: “I’m speechless – and I normally don’t do speechless.
“Where’s that money gone? Who’s it gone to?
“The number speaks for itself. All those people are still bombing along that road
“All the promises that were made. Me and my dad sat outside Woolworth’s in the freezing cold collecting signatures. When we went to the council meeting they said ‘we totally agree, it will happen’.
“Politicians will say anything you want to hear to get them in. Gone are the days of respect. Promises don’t mean nothing when you don’t keep them.”

Ronnie Wallsgrove was 82 when he suffered a broken thigh and shin, a smashed shoulder, and needed parts of his scalp glued back together after being hit by a car in January 2009.
He died last month.

Ronnie and his son John campaigned with the Obby for a safer Worth Road and were rewarded when the county council revealed plans for pedestrian refuges and a traffic island to improve crossings.

Yet more than two years later funds were reallocated due to “exceptional winter road repairs”.
The launch of the speed camera was marred by bitter exchanges as furious residents called for permanent safety measures.
When you state that cameras will help people will then expect improvements.
The reality is that they needed to look into why accidents occur and this one properly to establish if there was anything that might be done to improve the road through sound engineering and science. All very tragic. :(
