GARDAÍ IN CO WEXFORD are appealing for witnesses to a firebomb attack on a mobile speed camera van near Arklow last night.
The van, which was parked alongside the old N11 in Gorey, was “extensively damaged” in the attack which occurred at about 7:30pm last night. Nobody was injured in the incident, officers said.
Gardaí have asked for anyone who may have seen any unusual or suspicious activity around the van – a Citroen Relay van, with the registration number 11 KK 491 – which was parked around 1km south of Arklow on the old N11.
The van had been manned at the time, but its operator had evacuated the vehicle after he noticed a burning smell. As he got out, he realised the van had been set alight.
In particularly, Gardaí are looking for two masked men who they say were observed in the area shortly before the incident.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said it was “so wrong that this vital work, directed at making our community safer, should be the subject of a such mindless attack.”
Callinan said he condemned the attack ‘on the strongest possible terms’.
Witnesses are asked to contact Gorey Garda Station at (053) 9430690, or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
GoSafe is a private company that operates the country’s mobile speed cameras on behalf of the Gardaí.

Rush to check speed cameras crashes Garda website… but we’ve got
the mapI had hoped that this would not happen, but I am not the slightest bit surprised. I dare say more cases like this will follow too.
