The BBC have put an interactive map on their website showing the location and brief details of all road fatalities from 1999 to 2010:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720

For each fatal accident it states which vehicles and pedestrians were involved and who was killed, although doesn't go into blame or resulting convictions.

I saw this on another forum. The problem is that is, as you say, it is short on details. It also shows the randomness of fatal crashes with a few notable exceptions.

While I feel sympathy for the families involved. It is the cicumstances of the crash I am interested in. How can we learn to be better road users if we do not know how they happened.

I'm going to apply some SCP/ACPO thinking here:
In nearly all of the accidents, at least one of the parties was moving - ergo, moving - and particularly moving at speed must have been to blame!
Since moving occurs in so many of the cases, it must be the single most important cause of accidents.

That is why when you put up thousands of speed cameras, it reduces accidents - nothing else could have such an effect, even though hundreds of thousands of motorists continue to be caught moving at speed by the same cameras that are so effective in reducing speeds AND accidents!

:scratchchin:

That would be so useful to learn the attitudes, expectations and assumptions leading to these crashes. As I have said in the past: that would strongly help people to appreciate the risk of their next act.
