The following letter was published in the Lancs Eve Post on 4th May:-

"Camera site isn't a blackspot..

In the 3 years prior to the introduction of the speed camera on Golden Hill Lane, Leyland, there was one serious injury and no deaths. The "85th percentile speed" on the road prior to installation was 32mph.
This information was supplied to me by the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, under the Freedom of Information Act.
This isn't an accident blackspot and there isn't a speed problem, so why was the camera installed, unless its purpose is to raise revenue?"

I'm not holding my breath awaiting the Scammers reply....

Joking aside though, we should ALL be writing to our local papers. That's my second letter (to different papers) published in the last two weeks...

Yes, I regularly write to the Southampton Echo. The constant drip, drip, drip of adverse comments about cameras in the press keeps the issue in the public's eye.

My last letter is below and was in response to a comment in the paper from the local SCP Public Relations Manager (why they need one I can't imagine) that it was OK for them to park their vans on a hatched central reservation area.

--------

"I could hardly believe the fatuous response from Julian Hewitt to the letter
on 3rd May regarding the parking of a speed camera van in a notionally
illegal position.

If the road is marked with hatched lines, it must have been assessed that
the lines were necessary for safety when the location was originally
planned. Mr Hewitt says that their locations are checked for safety. Well,
who is right, the road planners or the camera partnership? If it is safe
then the lines should not be there.

His response effectively says "Yes, we do it because we are excused laws
made to promote road safety and which apply to all others." There must only be one set of laws for everyone. How difficult can it be for the camera
operators to act within the same rules as the rest of us? The attitude
exposed by Mr Hewitt's reply will only further alienate the SCP and the
police from the public.

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm

Lancs people will have more money from now on to pay more fines, and less for Man U tickets as that team is going down the swanny and spectators will have time on their hands to go speeding and get nicked so less taxes for honest people to pay.
