The new measures have been announced by the European Commission’s Mobility and Transport Department as a measure to reduce the 30,000 people who die on the roads in Europe every year.

A Government source told the Mail on Sunday Mr McLoughlin had instructed officials to block the move because they ‘violated’ motorists’ freedom. They said: “This has Big Brother written all over it and is exactly the sort of thing that gets people's backs up about Brussels.

“The Commission wanted his views ahead of plans to publish the proposals this autumn. He made it very clear what those views were.” against the Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) scheme is that the UK has a better road safety record than other European countries – with 1,754 people dying in road accidents last year compared to 3,657 in Germany.

The scheme would work either using satellites, which would communicate limits to cars automatically, or using cameras to read road signs. Drivers can be given a warning of the speed limit, or their speed could be controlled automatically under the new measures.

A spokesman for the European Commission said: “There is a currently consultation focusing on speed-limiting technology already fitted to HGVs and buses.

“Taking account of the results, the Commission will publish in the autumn a document by its technical experts which will no doubt refer to ISA among many other things.”

I can't see the Germans being very keen on the idea, either...

I fail to see where their proof is and how they can possibly think that this will be even possible.

We can't even control the right number plate on cars so how will they think for one second that they will manage to put this into all cars ...
MOT won't work because more and more people will just fail to register or mot their cars then !

It will fail I am sure because people instinctively KNOW the speed limit does not represent the SAFE limit and thus it is dismissed as enforcement for profit.

A sad sad day for road safety if this is ever rolled out! Which ever government has the 'courage' (refer to Yes Minister ! :) ) and allows this Dangerous Policy in will forever be condemned for it in the future! :(

To stop it all you need to do is to ask who will be charged with corporate manslaughter when it fails and someone dies as a result. Stand back and wait for furious back pedalling.

Motorways , we drive about 70 . Some faster, some a lot slower . Personally with 47 years on the roads, and with a Mrs of 45 years , not behif the wheel , but as a very observant ,and informed passenger , ( I did teach the essentials of driving), I feel that I've got two pairs of eyes on the road . However, on certain motorways, a constant speed causes CONGESTIION. We need to vary our speed to adjust to the conditions. Then ,I meet up with a car at 65 in L2. I pass and up my ass is a blue light at 70+. Soz, blokes, in my limited bus, I can'tv get out of your way. Normally I'd drop a gear and floor it .
Personally I'd suggest blokes in Blues start shouting.

Yes, they've been bleating on about this for some time now. Time to get some weird old positive earth classic I think!

The question is, what will happen when the figures don't fall at the rate they anticipated? We've seen it in the UK with the massive infestation of cameras and huge focus on speed limit enforcement in the last 20 years. When it failed to deliver the anticipated results, they started lowering speed limits all over the place. I wonder if that will happen at a European level when the Eurocrats realise the medicine isn't working?

And something I've seen on line could see RAC dragged into this . RAC offer a service caled "RAC ADVANCE" .

First bit makes me think that there's a GPS link .Might be ok for someone who is lost . For others ,there's sat nav . Diagnostics - computer talking to my one's ECU and it knows where I am . WHEN ? Smacks of BIG BRO to me . Gets me worried ,as I'm now an OAP and entitled to a blue badge and with that heavy discounts on membership . Sounds great, but if I'm still mentally fit to drive, do I realy want BB knowing what my car is telling them and why can't I be trusted to know where I am .(Not suggesting it could be used this way ,but if Brussels wants something bad enough ......).
However , this might be enough to kick start a push on MPs to ask for a vote on the EU . :shock:

it's not really again is it though.... ISA is an ongoing EU research topic.
even if they decide it's a good idea i dont think we're in any danger soon.
