Plans to reduce speed limit on Horseshoe Pass

The speed limit at a beauty spot with a history of road crashes could be reduced from 60mph to 40mph.

Denbighshire council and North Wales Police recommended the reduction on the Horseshoe Pass following a review.

A public consultation will be launched before a final decision is made.

The stretch, on the A542, reaches a maximum height of 417m (1,367ft) and there is a steep drop on one side. It is a well-known tourist spot, also popular with motorcyclists.

In April, the road - above Llangollen - was closed after a car fell down an embankment and a man was airlifted from the scene.

At the time, North Wales AM Llyr Gruffydd said safety on the road needed to be improved, and called for safety barriers or speed restrictions.

Is 40 the new 50, then? :x

They don't think that putting a sign up will really make any difference to speeds, do they?

I’ve been there twice on my motorbike. It’s as lovely as they say and there is absolutely no problem with the speed limit as it is! Yet another asinine BRAKEite ‘think of the children’ tosser who hasn’t the faintest idea what they’re talking about!

Any accident from speed along there would be from someone doing twice the limit, not from anyone doing the current speed limit. Probably some nut doing 100 mph gobs it and so they want to reduce the limit, like that is either going to cure the nutters doing 100mph or the current NSL is the real problem. :loco:

But, as always, why let the facts get in the way of yet more H&S lucrative legislation.

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

There has been a few local groups of people plugging for all A roads to all be 40mph which is just complete non-sense.

However for this report to suggest that barriers or a drop in speed is sensible is troubling. After all an engineering solution to prevention of falling down an embankment is clearly sensible and a proper reduction of crash severity a clearly good idea. However we know that reducing a speed limit usually only ever sees a reduction of 1mph so pretty pointless and one that fails to reduce accidents so considering that this is the aim, what would then be the point?

Prevention of accidents can only ever be effectively addressed when the causes are properly addressed.
