Woolworths speed camera detectors under fire
by James Quilter Marketing 14 Jun 2005

LONDON - Beleaguered retailer Woolworths is in trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority and senior police officers after publicising its sale of speed camera detectors in an ad campaign.

The ASA is investigating viewer complaints about the ads, created by Bartle Bogle Hegarty, which aired over the weekend.

Rick Naylor, president of the Police Superintendents Association, accused Woolworths of effectively helping people to break the law. However, the company insisted it was doing nothing wrong, saying that its Inforad Satellite-based Speed Camera Detector is legal, and similar products were being sold by "a number of well-known retailers".

The detectors are normally priced about £300, but Woolworths claims they are selling well at £79.99.

The chain recently changed its advertising strategy to reflect its position as a bargain retailer. It blamed a 4.4% fall in like-for-like sales in the 18 weeks to 4 June on difficult high-street trading conditions.

[whiny voice mode]Woolworths are selling these nasty howwible detector fingies and telling nasty dwivers about it. I want my nanny(state) :hissyfit: [whiny voice off]

And the fact that drivers with detectors are supposed to have better accident records?

What is it with these double standards ?

If they want "positive" publicity , they're called SAFETY cameras , and the second they want to imply wrong doing , they are for detecting SPEED cameras .

I wish they'd make their mind up . :banghead:

Woolies selling camera detectors  My, how the mighty have fallen - time was when all you could buy from there was a 1/4 pound of pick 'n' mix, a chart LP and a saucepan.

It's a bit strange how Woolies is considered to relatively down market in the UK - CDs, chocolates, and stuff at Christmas. Been to South Africa a few times and Woolworths there is the equivalent of Debenhams or John Lewis - they dominate the higher end of the market.

South Africa is also one of the few places in the world where the Big Mac is given the treatment it deserves - they tried them, decided they were rubbish, and gave them up for higher quality (but cheaper) local alternatives.
