Existing or planned speed humps and other traffic calming measures on blue routes will be subject to review, a move that could lead to some of them being removed or replaced by speed cameras

Yes, I read this as well. The BCC press release is here:

http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateCo ... ENU_ID=276

And the subject page is here (links to a PDF map of the blue routes, plus the report to the cabinet):

http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateCo ... ENU_ID=401

I have to say that I applaud the principle of no vertical calming, but it's a shame that (a) it's restricted to these routes, and (b) they mention consideration of speed cameras instead. I'm not altogether sure that they can get new cameras installed quite that easily, where there are no accidents to justify them. Or am I just too optimistic? One of my local councillors, who chairs the transport scrutiny committee, has stated that he will try to retain humps near schools, but whether he can do this in the face of the priority given to the emergency services I don't know either.

Quite a lot of talking points there.

Emergency service friendly speed bumps (the lump in the middle) seem to be the norm now and they are even more pointless than normal bumps because the biggest and heaviest vehicles can still go excessively fast and I think this may actually ENCOURAGE drivers of these particular vehicles to go even faster. So the slow speed of small cars is offset by the higher speed of the larger vehicles meaning nothing has been achieved.

One of the requirements when I chose my car was a nice wide track to straddle the infernal things.

What you need is a car like that cartoon character guy with the stretchy arms and legs, his car wheels stretch out and the car can go up and over things  Or evn one of them custom yank jobs that has the hydraulic lifter pumps on the suspension...!
