I was doing less than 20 miles per hour and I should never have lost control in a vehicle like that.

It had been raining that evening and the road was like a sheet of ice so the council needs to do something about the surface.

Quote:
A Rochdale Council spokesman said: “The road will be checked for skid resistance. Signs will be put up warning people there is a sharp bend there and the police are using a mobile speed camera in the area."

makes you wonder is the justificaton for the camera on the basis of accidents was down to a poor road surface in the first place.

From the photo I would be surprised if she was only doing 20mph. If she was, then it shows how bad the roll-over resistance is in a 'Chelsea Tractor'. At 20 it's unlikely a real car would have rolled.
Then she says that she was 'nearly killed'. That's a gross exaggeration as if she was properly strapped in a roll at such low speed would be unlikely to result in even a bruise. Indeed, the greatest risk would be when the seatbelt was undone and her head hit the roof!
However, the application of a mobile camera really does show how misguided the police and councils are in addressing road safety and bad road surfaces.

20mph I should Co-Co!
How come thousands of vehicles pass that spot and don't come to grief and 8 vehicles do so?
It should come as no surprise that the actual vehicle speed is halved by the drivers as he/she steps out having survived a major c*#k-up, and then makes no mention of the other circumstances behind the mishap.
A mention of "using a mobile camera in the vicinity" is a very tentative link to the camera helping or hindering the situation but does indicate that someone has found that drivers are exceding the speed limit and ACPO thresholds in enough quantities (>20% and 85th percentile at or above ACPO) to attract the attention of camera enforcement.
So taking all that into account just what is the problem in this location because it sure aint caised by the presence or otherwise of a camera?

I can't see what 4x4 is being used from the picture, but some 4x4s can suffer from torque wind when driven in 4x4 mode on the road too much. This can cause skiding.

secondly it is entirely possible to roll a 4x4 at 20mph.

imagine an off camber decline with a curb on a wet surface. You start to skid and hit the brakes and fail to steer correctly causing a 4 wheel slide into the curb.

what is really interesting is the 'I wasn't speeding so how come I crashed' attitude. This is a good example of the problems with over simplified road safety messages like 'speed kills'.

I've got to agree with Steve/JJ about how people might walk out of a car parked on it's roof and go "I can't understand it, I was only doing 20". Yeah, right, love. Was it 20mph before or after you rolled the bugger over?

Still Steve/JJ (and if it's Steve I wish you'd go back to using itschampionman or something), it's still possible that she was distracted by the camera. I've seen people brake way too late for the camera, and while I may not be too cut up if the local partnership got the muppets it doesn't change the fact that they were probably safer before they had the  "ohshit" moment and slammed the anchors on.

"Ok, this looks like a dangerous bit of road, let's have a looksie at my speedo... Less than 20, I'll be fine. Why is the road above me now?"

It can happen, if you hit a curb and at that curb you have a slight bank, if you hit the bank, the steering will steer towards the bank, up the bank you go. Before you know it, you're on your roof.

I know cos it happen to me on a private road 12 years ago whilst my brother offered me an ASDA doughnut. I wasn't travelling any more than 5 mph, My van landed in exactly the same position and I had to show the traffic Police the mark in the bank where the van had gone up.

After the Police and the firecrew had stopped laughing, i had to explain the situation to my boss. Careless, perphaps even dangerous driving had it been on a public road, over what was a lapse of concentration for about 2 seconds.

Notice also, that of course none of it was her fault!!!!!! my bottom it wasn't.

Hard to tell the make, but it looks like a square number plate... perhaps an import? Shogun or Landcruiser maybe?
