Road deaths rise by 11%
Apr 28 2004

Daily Post

ROAD deaths in North Wales rose by 11% in the last year.

There were 49 deaths, an increase of five, and the number of motorbikers killed has doubled in the last two years from seven to 18.

But North Wales police are on target to reduce deaths and serious injuries by 40%, the police authority's performance review committee heard.

Arrive Alive project manager, Inspector Alan Hughes, said on its targeted routes the number of deaths had dropped by 11 and serious injuries by 49, down 30%, compared to the average figure in the three years before.

Insp Hughes said speed cameras would now be used on additional routes in a six-month pilot scheme to try and reduce motorcycle casualties.

Deputy chief constable Clive Wolfendale said: "Our resolve is firm. Given the figures we see no alternative but to continue this work to try and curtail the motorcycle casualties.

"It's not without controversy in certain sections of the Press and lobby groups, but people are coming into North Wales as a sporting activity on public roads and paying the ultimate price."[/url]
