Scrap speed humps, say residents Sep 7 2005
South Wales Echo

ANGRY residents are demanding that speed ‘cushions’ be scrapped on a busy city road.

During a heated debate, scores of residents told council workers speed cameras on Circle Way West in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, were adequate and the bumps were not needed.

One resident suggested the cushions were like using ‘a sledgehammer to crack a nut’.

An 80-strong crowd claimed speed cushions slow emergency vehicles and are painful for people with back problems.

The traffic calming scheme was introduced earlier this year and involves 16 rubber speed cushions flanked by red road surfacing in a 30mph speed limit.

Cardiff Central MP Jenny Willott said: “I’ve had more communication from local residents on this matter than anything else in the whole Cardiff Central constituency. They’re almost all on the grounds of health problems, like back injuries.”

One local shop owner bought his exhaust to show council workers the damage caused by the £30,000 traffic calming scheme.

“If you go over the bumps at 25mph then there would be no damage, that’s what you said,” said Steve Patel, 53, of Glenwood.

“If you can drive down there and not get any damage on your car I’ll give you mine for free.”

Corporate director for highways and transportation, Steven Phillips said: “We have listened tonight and there is clearly a significant strength and depth of feeling against the speed cushion.

“But I’m not going to stand here and give you guarantees that they will be removed or amended in any way. What I can say is that we will take away the points made this evening and we will look at them.”

I bet you won't see this on the T2000 news page..

Wasn't there a case where a bus company refused to send their buses down a route because they had had a good number of their bus drivers go off sick with bad backs caused by new speed bumps?

From the ABD website:

Repeatedly traversing humps causes long-term damage to vehicle components, especially the suspension. This in turn has serious implications for safety and stopping distances. Shock absorbers are key in ensuring vehicles are able to stop effectively and safely - perhaps if a child ran in front of a car. Residents of areas plagued with speed humps find they have to replace their shock absorbers far more often. Humps can even cause immediate damage to the bodywork of large vehicles such as buses, to the underside of cars with low ground clearance, and wreck front number plates, spoilers and exhausts. Goods carried in vehicles can also be damaged.

Speed humps are nothing more than inverted potholes. Whilst local councils readily admit that potholes are dangerous and cause damage to vehicles, they intentionally install speed humps which are just as dangerous, and then try to deny that they cause damage.
A speed hump on Corporation Street in Birmingham had to be rebuilt after numerous double-decker buses suffered damage to their front bodywork.
A Birmingham bus company threatened to withdraw services from two roads when the council tried to install large speed humps, because of damage caused to low floor buses elsewhere in the city. The council backed down and installed 'speed cushions' instead. Article from the Evening Mail
Fire Engines fitted with a water tank containing up to 2,250 litres may suffer structural damage so great that it puts the appliance off the road, and results in a massive repair bill.
It's not just drivers who face increased costs. In Hastings in November 2002, taxi fares were increased by 10p during the day and 20p at night to pay for the increased cost of maintenance due to damage caused by traversing speed humps up to 200 times per day.
Speed humps in Uppingham, Rutland, caused a lorry to shed it's load of meat, blocking the road for hours.

In 2004, the Metropolitan Police told the London Assembly 34 of its vehicles had been damaged by speed bumps in a three month period. A subsequent report issued by the London Assembly's transport committee stated that the cost of this damage was £7,500. BBC
We have recieved reports that the Rover Metro is particularly probe to damage to the sump-drainage valve.
