Eighteen year old Danny F was killed on the A575 in Farnworth. It is thought his scooter clipped the kerb near the petrol station on Saturday evening.
The impact knicked him from the scooter and it is believed his helmet dislodged before he hit the ground leading to the serious head injuries which claimed his life at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
The petrol shop assistant was serving a customer when he heard the crash and then saw a helmet in the road and the youngster sprawled nearby He called the ambulance and a passing motorist stopped to assist.
Albert Road was closed for several hours whilst the police investigated the cause of the accident - and they are still appealing for witnesses. Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact Bolton's traffic unit on 0161 - 856 7273 or Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
Hmm. Actually do know this road. Was based at the Bolton District (now the Royal Bolton) for one of my student practice stints. (Hospital is not that far away.) Road bends just before this garage and right hand turns from one the exits were a bit blind as a result. As far as am aware from colleagues at the Royal - has not been engineered out - though they did place traffic lights at another nasty junction further up from the garage. Road is fairly wide though - as I recall - admit bit puzzled as to why he would have been so close to the kerb...
Interestingly the Manchester paper describes ithe incident in a less "pee-cee" fashion. Their short paragraph on page two reads:
"he ploughed into the kerb" - whilst the Bolton paper speaks about the grief felt by family and old school chums.
