In Monday 26th London Metro newspaper, story that speed fines have increased 500% in the last yrs. Shows also the areas of the country that have raised/least the most money. Not surprisingly South Wales is top with £7.3M. Figures from the DfT.

ABD said "the police and councils spend as much money as they can on revenue-raising camers yet the number of deaths has remained virtually unchanged for the past ten years. The amount of money raised is a measure of their failure. Successful cameras should produce relatively little income".
Paul Smith added "the runaway gravy train has to stop"....

DfT said cameras only at black spots and that "it was impossible to do a yr-on-yr comparsion because the number of speed traps was continually changing"....

Per today's Manchester paper (John Williams reports on page 16)

Not exactly slowing anyone down - or teaching anything either. On the other hand - cash means jobs for the boys!

Cameras produce a record £2.2m in Road Safety Crakcdown

Speed cams in Cheshire have clocked up a record £2.2m in fixed penalty fines. Latest report from Cheshire's SCP shows a total of 45,354 fixed penalty notices were issued up to March 2005.

Research shows 79 fewer people were KSI'd at scam sites in Cheshire compared with the previous two years..

But we stil have no before/after proof or workings. Locals like elsewhere cannot recall accidents at these sites so - er - same old... same old .. same old. Should be zero to claim "effective" and fines should also be "zero" to claim effective. On the other hand an old fashioned cop and some paint did work wonders on the Cat & Fiddle per BBc's Traffic Cops - which also showed a very dangerous driver slowing to a perfect compliance at the scam site and then accelerating to way OTT speeds and quite frankly dangerous driving. Not my idea of success - but then my job requires 100% precision and attention to little details. Oh - and we have to prove ability before allowed to train in first place

They claim minor collisons are down by 24%

:? Insurance company stats do not show same picture - but do say less report of of minors than previous - or claim for minors. than previous.

Motorists are driving about 3 mph slower past these sites than they used to

Hang on = they're supposed to flash and take a photo if you are above the speed limit tolerance. So - how do they know this? Or are the ping speeds lower - as in 32/33 mph and we are getting to nitty gritty of prosecutions below ACVPO guidelines of 10% plus 2? :?

Chief Super Derek Barnett claims the prats are improving road safety

"As a result people are alive today who would otherwise be dead"

I could say that about my patients. But modern medicine does not always do what it says on the label! All I can hope for is quality and comfort in remaining life span.

But in any case, he cannot know that for certain. Just because you fine thousands does not mean an equal number of prevented accidents, especially when some of these pings occurred on empty roads,

Basingstoke reportedly has more CCTV cameras than New York - but crime rates are the same... reportedly  And people are still getting fined and number of accidents has not changed either. Would not like to put money ont his blooke's opinion then ! I'm sure the "millionaires" in Wilmslow and Alderly Edge are well pleased at burglaries not being solved too.

:banghead: where do they find them? :banghead:

Lee Murphy continues: We have to make speeding as unacceptable as drink driving. Speed ruins the quality of their life

:? Nope - cannot say my life has been ruined by driving fast on a track day or in Germany...and the odd little safe blip on the motorway.. :bunker: Ian? :bunker:

Cehsire prats claim 87% support speed cameras and accept they save lives on roads with a high accident rate.

Gone up form 75% then. Ah! stratified sampling of blue rinsed brigade and one or two muesli militants., As most people I know in Cheshire hold similar views to most on here, at work and amongst all pals... and in the various watering holes Wildy and self visit.

Also think the quote gives clew as to skewing of the questionnaire to "give required answer"
