Some time ago I posted about a case where two youths were killed in an accident in Southampton. I was making a point about people not admitting the real causes of crashes for fear of upsetting relatives of the dead. There were the usual floral shrines and highly publicised funeral for the two "lovely" boys.
The report of the inquest was in today's paper and the driver was held totally blameless as the boys had veered into his path. This decision was reached as:
- the youths had been drinking
- they had taken ecstasy (one a fatal dose)
- the motorcycle had a bald rear tyre which was at low pressure
- they had no crash helmets
- no tax, insurance etc.
The Coroner did say that he would be speaking to the council about installing streetlights in the road concerned.
Although I am in favour of streetlighting this clearly will do nothing about the causes of this incident.
