Is the highly emotive headline of tonight's "Bolton Evening News"
A seventeen year old was run over by a "speeding driver"

on Albert Road, Farnworth - close to the site where the 18 year old clipped the kerb on his scooter and died of head injuries - and think I put this on here somewhere

at the time
The incident occurred at 11.30 pm on Saturday when the lad was walking a friend home. His friend dropped her mobile phone in the middle of the road and he went back to pick it up
Ah... we get to the truth - no insult intended to the lad - but it seems to me that more importance is attached to these damned things than life itself.. Fancy wanting to be buried with the wretched thing... My idea of hell someone phoning me all the time.
As the lad stooped to pick up the phone - he was struck by a driver who failed to stop. The lad (who is recovering
at home said the driver was on the wrong side of the road....

Does not remember anything but the sight of the car as it approached him.
Now - cannot and will not condone driver for running from the scene and failing to report, nor if he really was on the wrong side of the road can anyone defend.
However, given the lad received per the paper report mild concussion, cuts and bruises - this car could not have been "speeding" as a hit at 30 mph or even 25 mph against a chap bending to pick something up would have given a fatal blow to the head as head would be closer to the ground given he was stooping to pick up a small telephone. : roll:
So - under the circumstance - driver not guilty of speeding but guilty of colliding with another, failing to stop and report. Perhaps at that time - may have run because of a drink or no insurance/MOT or may have been on 9 points even - and thus panicked.
The parents claimed that cars failed to slow down despite police cars and ambulances with flashing lights. Now that I just do NOT believe! That is shock talking!
Police believe the car to be a Rover and urge anyone with any information to call the traffic unit at 0161 856 7273
