A relief road has joined iconic buildings, including Tate Modern, by winning a top architectural prize.

The A650 Bingley bypass in West Yorkshire beat 16 other projects including public toilets in Hampshire and Trafalgar Square's redevelopment.

The £50m road, which has helped end 20 years of congestion in the town, won first place in the prime minister's Better Public Building Award.

The judges said the 4.5km road had made an "immense difference" to the town.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perhaps slightly off-topic, but it's good to see a new road project getting this kind of recognition. After all, improving roads is one of the most effective ways of improving safety.
This was on the "Today" programme on BBC R4 this morning. They had one of their mini-debates between the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (the awarding body) and Friends of the Earth. FoE, true to form, were as ungracious and sour as could be, and trotted out their usual cliches about "destroying natural features" (a small SSSI, apparently), and "can't build your way out of congestion". Sorry, but it seems to have worked for Bingley town centre! When will they wake up and smell the coffee?
When ever I fly I always take a peek out of the window at the sights below me.
If you want to talk about destroying natural features you need to talk about agrculture!!!!
Roads are hardly visible. Everywhere you see are fenced off fields. Surley this has a much greater impact on the environment than any roads.
Nothing much of the "natural" landscape exists anymore. It has all been "cultivated".... :?
Indeed - the actual land take of new roads is remarkably small, as any aerial photograph shows. Virtually all maps, even the OS 1:50 000 Landrangers, greatly exaggerate the true width of roads.
All the propaganda that T2000 and other anti-movement pressure groups trot out about "concreting over Britain" is absolute nonsense.
