The number of speed cameras in London has risen by over 100 in the last year, with a similar increase in numbers likely over the next 12 months.
According to figures from the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP), there are now 470 speed cameras in London. The dubious honour of the borough with the most cameras goes to Croydon, with 32, followed by Enfield (29) and Tower Hamlets (25).
The lowest is Kensington & Chelsea, with none, while the average number per borough is 14.
There are also 276 cameras to catch motorists who drive through red lights, an average of eight per borough.
The RAC Foundation said it was concerned about the rise in cameras, executive director Edmund King saying: 'We should be getting more police patrols instead of just putting up cameras, which can't spot dangerous drivers or drug- and drink-drivers.'
Although it plans to install more cameras in the next year, the LSCP is also expected to concentrate on identifying more offenders, as of the 310,000 motorists caught speeding by cameras last year, only 162,000 paid their fines. It will also install more speed indication devices, which flash up a driver's speed without taking a photograph, and is starting speed awareness courses for offenders from April.
