David Begg, the governments 'independent??' transport policy advisor was on BBC radio Scotland today, on the lesley riddoch show at lunchtime. He was there to discuss his new aim to get 4x4's off the road -as they are 'too dangerous'. What he said on this was pretty much nonsense really.
However, during the course of a phone in debate, he admitted the following: (these are not quotes, but as close as I remember)
Fatalities had gone up in the last year of figures
The current government have not been focusing enough on drunk drivers, drugged drivers, dangerous or reckless drivers, and that these types of problem were forcing the accident figures up. He also stated without prompting of any kind, that part of the reason for this was that in some areas the level of actual traffic policing (he meant police traffic officer hours here) had not been enough or had decreased. For a brief moment, I thought either it was really Paul Smith, or that Begg had finally seen the light.
Until he ended with the comment that all of these things do not mean that speed cameras don't work. He was ademant that speed cameras are very successful.
Remarkable.
Not sure, but for those who did not hear it or can't receive BBC Scotland, try this link. LINK:http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/view/show.shtml?listen_again and choose lesley riddoch for Today.(I haven't tried it myself)
