I heard on the BBC4 Today Program a few weeks ago that they were thinking of bringing in new cameras that can detect if you are too close to the car in front. Tailgating is undeniably dangerous but just imaging this:
A group of cars widely spaced and travelling at a perfectly safe speed (a little over the very arbitrary speed limit) down the motorway.
As the drivers see the camera they slow down to avoid a speeding fine.
As the cars break in turn they bunch up and Snap! Snap! Snap! The camera gets the lot for being too close together!

What about someone driving along at a perfectly safe speed, car behind does a perfectly safe overtake, pulls back in - perfectly safely - just as you go past a tailgating camera and off it goes. You get the fine.

What about if someone does something completely insane and cuts you up? Off goes the camera, you get the fine.

They're a crap idea, just like pretty much all automated policing policies.

The technology can't do the one important thing a copper can - use judgement!

It's a stupid idea but they have to spend the budget somehow!

I think the above quote is the most significant staement that undermines the more genuine belief that Cameras are bad for Road safety.

Basically what you are saying is that you have the chance to get off with speeding if you are stopped by a copper not flashed by a camera. Quite frankly I think thats a really bad argument.

Personally I would rather have Police who have no discretion and have a 100% booking policy against speeders than cameras anyday as only police are a deterent against the other factors that cause road accidents.

The argument that "I may get off if its the police" should be confined to the dustbin as much as the one third lie.
