On Anglia TV (or 'Look East' on BBC) there was a feature on the setting up of local speed camera groups of villagers to check vehicle speeds with the assistance of the Essex Plod. It was stated that drivers caught will receive a letter of warning, but that prosecution will follow for anyone caught 3 times or more. How can a villager 'form a prior opinion of speed' and how can that info be used to prosecute without any supporting evidence? From the TV shot of the vigilantees using the guns, there was no video being taken.
Apparently this will be 'rolled-out' across the county soon.
Madness rules OK!
How about similar vigilantee groups to film drug dealers outside clubs and schools - might do more good!
I feel an email to Essex plod coming on.

I wonder what kind of speed detection they're using and is it type approved.

I think the lanuage they use - is targeted for enforcement. (same as surrey's speed watch).

I suspect they'd issue a FPO and bluff and bluster and then drop it if you went to court. Are there any cases of convictions from speed watch?

I think it's true that these vigilantees have absolutely no legal standing whatsoever. Why not stop and ask what your speed was, then ask if that's 'fastest time of day', and if not, go back for a second run!

Have, on occasion, seen such operations in other areas... usually using a (portable) speed operated flashing sign - and the local busybody with pencil & paper noting the reg'n.

There are also those with a police issue hairdryer....recognisable from the group of fusspots huddled around the 'operator' - and for 'training' a plod standing aroumd looking bored.

Plenty of time to react to either of these. Have heard stories though of 'knuckle rap' letters emanating from them.

Interestingly, in a couple of villages where schemes have recently started, the speed limit signs are patently outside of statutory requirements. Curious that they're looking to enforce the unenforceable rather than correcting the deficiencies first.

And I'm sure I heard a story where someone complained about such a letter and got a written appology!

I wish I could find some of these speedhunting villiagers, I'd have some fun driving back and forth at different speeds...

The community spirited amongst you might be interested in the following advertisement in a Northamptonshire parish magazine;
Quote:
COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH

HAD ENOUGH OF TRAFFIC SPEEDING THROUGH THE VILLAGE?

We have been given another opportunity to use hand held speed cameras to tackle speeding .

If you can help in day light hours in September please contact Jenny Hodgson on (01933) 461868

It would seem that Jenny would like to hear from any interested parties, so please do what you can to help further the interests of the community.

PLEASE don't get the Safe Speed campaign a bad name in the process.

In fact everyone should exercise appropriate caution and judgement at all times. :yesyes:

Here, here, I don't condone being a nuisance for the sake of it, however for anyone with a legitimate interest in the matter it would seem she is interested to hear from you.

She may be able to explain what happens after they hand over their results to the police, which would be interesting to know about.

Which Northants parish is that. The tel code is Rushden and i have some property there I visit regularly, so I might go and 'wind-up' the vigilantees next time I'm there. I'll stop and ask them some questions about joining them, what their official status is, what accident insurance they carry from the Police, how their 'speed camera' works, whether prosecutions result, etc.

This business eventually ended up in the Yellow Advertiser (Chelmsford and Maldon edition), they have asked for views, I shall be letting them know mine, also given the potential safety aspects I might be tempted to point out how safety concious ECP are.
