I noticed this on the Parliament Hansards.

The number of fatalities in personal injury road accidents in the City of Leicester in each year from 2001 to 2005 is shown in the following table.

19 July 2006 : Column 435W
Fatalities in City of Leicester: 2001-05
Number
2001..........10
2002..........4
2003..........7
2004..........11
2005..........10

The table shows the number of speed camera sites, broken down by type, which are operated by the Leicestershire Safety Camera Partnership.

............Leicestershire.............Leicester city...............Total
Fixed...........8..................................7.........................15
Mobile.........43................................22........................65
Total...........51................................29........................80

So even with all those speed cameras they haven't managed to reduce road deaths within in the five years.

Similar picture in Staffordshire (where, don't forget, there are 7.4 scameras per trafpol).

Since 1998, road deaths have remained at ca. 300 per year.

I know Leicester quite well - it's my home town. Way back in the 1960s, another experiment was tried - the traffic lights were set to bypass the red+amber stage and go straight from red to green - just as it is in Europe and USA. The experiment was abandoned because it was felt that pedestrians did not get sufficient warning.

IIRC, Leicester and Southampton were the first cities ever to get traffic lights - many, many years ago.

I think it was actually Wolverhampton.
