Google earth image with roads overlay. No hires images of this part of the world available yet.
The westbound onslip / eastbound offslips are the ones at the Mountain Rd end of the pic.

There's nothing in the junction design that compounds the congestion. It's simply a busy 2 lane m-way with a nonsensical speed limit enforced by a cash machine.

The main problem is that the location is preceeded by a tricky and windy elevated section, people naturally accelerate upon leaving this only to come accross the camera then slam on the anchors.

The road layout and junction stuff is a red herring.

The camera and it's cash grabbing location is the problem. Pure and simple.

Virtual Earth has some hi-res images here. There are a few other similar congested areas around the country, often where there are two junctions in close proximity. The Fareham junctions of the M27 are similar, but not so close.

Not sure if this will add anything to the discussion, but I was a resident in the area for the first 19 years of my life and can confirm that the stretch of M-Way in question has been subject to a 50 limit since at least 1986.

Noise reduction, perhaps, due to the proximity of adjacent housing?

The 50 limit on the elevated section has been there since I can remember and certainly since I passed my test so your 1986 date may well be right.

I would guess that the limit is due to the tight radius bends through the section coulpled with the blind entry slips and close proximity of the parapets....however.

The 50 limit is extended at least a mile too far beyond this section w/b onto the long straight sectio approaching the new britton ferry bridge.....and guess where the camera is????

The e/b camera, whilst annoying, is more difficult to argue against (if you except for a minute that they work!!!) But the w/b coupled with the extended limit is an example of pure greed!
