MPs call for 'speedcam orgy'

FURY erupted last night after MPs called for MORE speed cameras — on roads with NO history of crashes.
They favour more new-generation cameras that record average speeds over distance.
The Commons’ transport committee said it was a “disgrace” that Gatsos could only go up at accident blackspots. But Paul Smith, of Safe Speed road safety campaign, wants all the UK’s 6,000 fixed and mobile speed cameras scrapped.
He said they had failed to make roads safer. Andrew Howard, of the AA Motoring Trust, said “limiting cameras to accident sites” was key to them being accepted by motorists.
In a report, the MPs also called for more police traffic patrols. Relying on cameras meant drink-drivers and those who are using mobiles dodge fines, they said. Committee chairman Gwyneth Dunwoody insisted: “Technology must support police, not replace them.”
